Question:
Is ToME "listen to the music" at prayer level 30, which IDs everything
on the level", equivalent to Preserve Mode off? It's not the stuff on
the floor that worries me; I can scan all the stuff on the floor from
far away. It's the monsters that I never even see that are of concern.
I'm wondering if that's why I'm seeing relatively few artifacts,
because I'm losing them forever when I decline to search a level
completely.
I was really suffering until dl 72, where I finally got Elessar, Thorin
and a RoS(+9) after fighting a dozen Bile Wyrms. The princess didn't
drop anything, but her guardians sure did.
Question:
Is un-hero Legendary[2]/Legendary[37] enough for Archer, or do I need
to spend more skill on fighting and shooting? I've been pretty much
pure shooting so far, but that was because I was using Westernesse for
the CON. The edged weapon was hell on accuracy, unless using artifact
blessed ammo.

It also identifies carried stuff. That's the danger of this spell...

As an archer you *should* be mainly shooting.
If you invest most of your remaing skill-points into
'Crossbow-mastery' you should get another extra-shot at 48 and another
+1 to might at 50. That would be nice, don't you think?

If you have full note-taking turned on, you can check ~ to see if there
are any artifacts on the level, as the notes get made when the IDs are
done. At least you know whether you need to look around.

Some ToME questions...
1 Is there any requirement to kill the Necromancer of Dol Guldur, or
destroy
the One Ring, or can I just go back to 4900' in Angband and kill
Sauron and
Morgoth?
If I actually were to take all the quests or finish the various
dungeons, the
game would be hopelessly mickey-mouse. And I really don't want to
scum for
the One Ring. I'd rather risk having ring-wraiths and Sauron be
summoned.
I kind of like all the little options and bonus magic stuff even for
a
non-magic-user, but there are just too many involved quests. Killing
Maeglin
and such is one thing: level quests are dangerous. Doing a whole
extra
dungeon or two, when I'm already level 50 is a bit extreme. I'm
already past
4M moves, though many of those moves were in town-scumming for ?Phase
Door,
and leaving useless stuff at various houses.
2 I still haven't figured out the magic device system. I've got Heroic
device
capability, but I have pathetic fail rates on staves & wands of
genocide.
They are only useful in preparing for big battles, not for banishing
summoned
stuff during battle. I gave up an extra shot for the low failure
rate on
devices. But that only seems to apply to rods & artifacts. Though
it's still
worthwhile to get low failure rate on rods and artifacts.
3 How is the spell level calculated for a non-caster? I've somehow
inherited
the disciplines of Divination and Mana. Very nice. I'd like to get
the
elemental protection mana spell, so I don't have to wait arond for
colluin.
But I don't know what stats get used for spell level.

Sorry about the bad formatting in that last one. I did kill 'the
necromancer', after realizing that I could recall to a level I'd never
been to before. But now apparently I have to destroy the ring, which
has rarity 100 :-(

ToME has changed the generation of the One Ring. There are a few monsters
that have 10% chance of dropping it. I once got it from Glaurung.
Sauron has about 30% chance of dropping it, and you now where to find him.
And Sauron will return, unless the One Ring is destroyed or wielded.
Same with Ringwraiths.
So kill Sauron, maybe a few times, and you have the ring.

If you can't get it from the other monsters, you may have to kill Sauron
repeatedly. He will come back like his Ringwraiths, until you wear or
destroy the one.
