Dear colleague adventurers,
It has come to my ear that there exists a file
filled with information about the artifacts.
However the link on the Thangorodrim site does
not work. Does anyone have a copy of this file?

The ladder (angband.oook.cz) has an artifact spoiler.
You could also try reading the edit file
(lib/edit/artifact.txt) that comes with the game.

You should try to learn how to read that file. That way, if you play
a variant without a spoiler file, or if the artifacts change faster
than the spoilers, it doesn't matter.

If you still have trouble downloading the spoiler file(s), let me know
and I'll mail you a copy. (Note: you will need a client that is FTP
capable to download the spoiler files!)
Note that this directory includes many spoiler files. Some of these are
seriously outdated (last modified in 1996). I've been busy updating the
spoilers, but my time is limited and I have other things I'd like to do
as well, so progress is slow. So far, I have only finished the item
spoilers (artifact.spo, obj-desc.spo, obj-good.spo, and obj-full.spo)
and the magin spoilers (books.spo and magic.spo). I'm currently working
an a spoiler for all the attack types and other actions available to
monsters - but don't hold your breath for it!
Note that you can also generate the artifact spoiler from the game. Use
a throwaway character for this, as the savefile will be marked; your
current character AND all future characters generated from this savefile
will not be enetered in the highscore list. So generate the spoiler,
then exit the game and delete the savefile used when generating the
spoiler. The keypresses to generate the artifact spoiler file are
Ctrl-a, ", 2 (Control-key plus a, double quotation mark, number two) and
the spoiler file will be generated in the \lib\user subdirectory of your
Angband directory.
If you also need a full explanation of what all the terms in the spoiler
mean, and how some effects work EXACTLY, then download the spoiler file
obj-good.spo as well. It's final chapters have a full explanation of all
special properties that magic items in Angband may possess.
Oh, and of course the warning: these files are not named "spoiler" for
no reason. For some elements in the game, finding them out by trial and
error is more fun than looking them up. Which elements those are is
different for everyone. But remember: always think twice before looking
something up, as you'll never be able to undo it - don't deprive
yourself of the fun of finding out the hard way.
Of course, if you keep forgetting what spell is in what book, what the
typical price for a Beaked Axe of Acid is, or what chance monsters have
to resist Holcolleth's Sleep II activation, using a spoiler is no
problem.

Hello Hugo,
thank you for your elaborate answer. I found the artifact
spoiler file already. I returned to Angband last week. I have
been playing it for nearly 14 years previously, way back before
Ben Harrison took over the sources! So, I know how to enjoy the
game. :-)
