How old is the cd/dvd drive in question?
If it is quiet old then it may be a case that the laser lens needs a clean of the drive as it is dirty. The older the drive the weaker the laser gets so it has trouble reading discs put into the drive. If windows throws up errors it is likely the cause. replacing the drive should resolve this. Make sure all of your cd`s and dvd`s are clean on the reading side wipe them with a cloth to remover dirt or finger marks.
If feel up to it. you can take the drive out of the pc case and open the enclosure of the cd/dvd drive. You can give the laser lens a clean to remove dirt that may of built up over time, just use a lens cleaner cloth like the one you get with a pair of glasess, or use an alcohol screen wipe.
This can sometimes fix read problems with the drive.
