when you get something like that (you specialize in digesting meat/are
primarilly a herbavore) you gain more nourishment from those items,
but less from the other food items.

For example: If you're a herbavore, apples/oranges/bananas will reduce
your hunger better then if you were a carnivore and eating those same
food items.

Level 1 gives a small bonus/penalty when eating some foods and is
*good* to have.
Level 2 gives a larger bonus/penalty which can be good and bad from
time to time. But mostly bad if you can't find the food items you're
specialized to.
Level 3 will absolutely restrict you as to which items you can and
can't eat. This mutation has to be reduced or REMOVED before you
starve to death. Biggest fear is to have several meat rations, but
you're a herbavore only, and thus cannot eat those life-saving meat
products. :/

Mutations tend to have 3 levels, with ever stronger effects. I'll
add a list of all of them at the end of this post. (Didn't know the
scale descriptions weren't random. It's from mutation.cc from the
source. If someone could provide a link for you, you might like to
take a look at it yourself. Even I manage to find some answers
there, and I have no clue at all. :) )

I do rather like that mutation as well, but poisonous food is still
poisonous without poison resistance.

Kobolds, trolls, and I think ogres are carnivorous to start with.
Ghouls actually heal when they eat rotten meat, and it heals their
own rotting. (Nagas, btw, are poison resistant.)

There's an amulet that'll let you eat meat even when you aren't
hungry: amulet of the gourmand. It'll also allow you to eat rotten
food without getting sick. Actually, when you've got this amulet,
it's better to let chunks of orc (for example) rot before eating
them, because if you eat them fresh, you might get sick. (Sick just
means you'll not heal up Hp. and might lose the occasional point of
Str, Dex or Int until it's over). This might be a bug, not sure.

On a note related to mutations, Demonspawn get random, supposedly
positive ■, mutations during the game that can't be gotten rid of.
Xom likes to mutate his followers at whim, which in my experience
tends to be more positive than negative. Xom's fun, though, anyway,
even when he tries to kill you. Think of him as the RNG's little
brother, doing more obvious meddling in your business.

■ I object to +Str / -Dex mutations and similar being counted
among the positive ones.

You can't. They are much like the Shoggoth in that they aren't
currently implemented.

Ah, thanks. How can one distinct the stuff that's implemented and

Will they ever get implemented? They sound nifty.

A carnivore hardly has to fear starvation, there are plenty of
monsters around.

And on you go spreading misinformation.

You still can eat meat rations, you just can't eat raw meat.

Btw. Is it just me or are honeycombs and royal jelly good either
way? (I'm not asking you but hope someone else here knows that.)

Unless you happen to be in one of the dungeon branches where there are
very few edible monsters.

You might be able to eat meat rations, but the food value is reduced
from 5000 to 500 for the third level of the herbivorous mutation.

They don't appear to be affected by the mutation, but I can't be sure
without doing a search outside of food.cc

even if its off topic, well im primaryly in my favourite char a carnivore
and
the honeycombs and the royal jelly are quite good. i eat everything rotten
except the eye-things (im resistant to acid too) because the eye-things
cost me a very advanced char.... (well thats bad)

if someone would go into this deeper he would know that 'a honeycomb' is
'NO PLANT' at all and even royal jelly. they count upon the vegan
rules as 'flesh' at all and are no grown thing. they are made of/from moving
things.

If you go there, then that's your fault, isn't it? <g>

(I'm not considering Pandemonium or Abyss as part of that, because
ending up there is bad news anyway, and especially with Pandemonium,
you might just end up dead no matter what you can or can't eat.)

"Rations" means FOOD. Meat FOOD. Chunks CAN be considered "Meat
rations" even though Chunks and Meat rations are two different things.
On top of that, 5000 > 500. 500 won't do diddly-all for you, unless
you have 10's of the rations... (Apples, bread, meat, chunks, and
pizza can all be considered Rations as the word rations means: (From
Dictionary.com)
"_A fixed portion, especially an amount of food allotted to persons_
in military service or to civilians _in times of scarcity._")

And know that there is no edit feature on these forums that i may know
of; for if there was i would certainly use it to correct myself. :)
(The fact that it takes several hours for my post to apear on the
boards p***es me off, too... but that's another story.)

Except that in many roguelikes, including Crawl, ration has a more
specific meaning.

This is a newsgroup, not a "board". While "forum" is technically correct
for any "place" for discussion, it suggests confusion with a "web
forum". Tina is quite right to complain about your sloppiness with
language. It does make you appear to be careless at best, clueless at
worst.

Why off topic? This isn't just for questions, you can tell as many
tales about your characters that you wish to share. :) (Or are you
refering to the nature of honeycombs and royal jelly?)

> well im primaryly in my favourite char a carnivore and the

Everything rotton? With an amulet of the gourmand? Or do you mean
all meat chunks? Rotten means 'verdorben/vergammelt'.

> except the eye-things

Normal (those that paralyze) eyes are ok to eat, the others give
mutations.

> (im resistant to acid too)

An amulet of resist corrosion?

> because the eye-things cost me a very advanced char.... (well
> thats bad)

How far did he get? What happened?

> if someone would go into this deeper he would know that 'a

I didn't say it was a plant (well, it's obviously not a plant), but
it could be considered vegan or something.

My question was aimed at there being no complaint by the game (no
message) when eating honeycombs and royal jelly, whether you're
herbivore or carnivore.

> they count upon the vegan rules as 'flesh' at all and are no grown

Made by bees, but the ingredients are part plant... I mean,
basically it's much like a pancake (those that actually contain eggs
and milk, not just flour and water <g>).

What it means is irrelevant, we've got definite terms in the game.
There are food rations, there are meat rations, there are chunks of
foo meat, and all are different. No need to shout it isn't so.

This is especially important when trying to give advice to newbies,
and especially more so when English isn't the every-day language of
the one you're talking to. We've got plenty of such people here,
myself included. While with some you don't notice it, it'd be
impolite to expect someone from Poland or Germany, for example, to
speak and understand perfect English.

Such a mistake can cost a character his life, and while it is only a
game, that isn't nice.

And instead of replying 'Oops, sorry.' you go on shouting about
being right.
