I am finally gonna give in and go with an AMD processor!!! This is a definite sign of the apocalypse :) Now my question is....Is there that big of a performance difference between a Duron and a T-bird? I am looking at the 800 MHz processors. With an asus A7V Board.

I believe you should be able to find the duron/tbird 850 at pretty much the same price, tbird might be a few extra bucks, no big deal. The performance you gain is large enough to pay the little extra.

Once a Tbird passes 800 mhz a Duron, even overclocked at 1000 mhz, cannot keep pace. Here is a good article showing the relative performance.

I suggest going with the A7V133, even if you don't intend to use the 133MHz FSB. The Promise ATA100 controller is flaky on the A7V but seems to be corrected on the A7V133. Also, you have the option of running a newer "C" stepping T-bird or Palomino later on if you need more speed.
