One of the hazards of self-sustaining fire, generally, is that it
spreads.
At least Conjure Fire, if not other fire element spells, could include
the random chance that fire spreads to another square (or two.
naturally, a monster trapped between two columns of fire could be in
danger...

or perhaps this should be the form of a fire elemental (living fire,
burns on NO fuel, but spreads. I dunno; i've yet to see the elemental
in the game; maybe it's already that way.

That's because it is not magical. Or controlled. Self-sustaining fires
for cooking or lab work do not spread unless there is something very
wrong. Think of the conjured fire as a tap to the Plane of Propane.

You reminded me something: is there any good method for the
warrior-type to fight the Orb of Fire in Zot? Lost relly nice
character this way...
