Hi all, it's tax time and I'm wondering if my setup is fine for awhile? Will my P3 550e will hold me over for another year?
Was thinking of going to a P3 850, but my friends say its a waste of time to, and should go 1 ghz, but that would require a new mobo. And like some money left to get the NV20 when it comes out..

Thanks in advance..

Looks good to me also. The only thing I can say is that if you plan on getting the NV20 you will need to get a 1.2+ CPU or you will be wasting the vidio card. I say save your money and next year you will get a really kick ars system.

Someday I will stop asking all the questions!

I have PIII 450 with 384 MB of PC100 CL2 RAM, 27.3 and 30 GB Hard drives, 6xDVD 4xCD-RW, ATI Rage 128 32MB vid card, etc... and I got that a year ago in august..... but I'm building a new system just because Im bored and feel like building one )...

-AMD's are not for the faint of heart... Intels? those are for newbies )-

If you really do have a lot of money, then go for it. You worked for the money, so spend it. But it seems to me that the system you have is fine. When you are ready to get the NV20, then consider upgrading.

I say leave it alone for now....and in june-july, get a DDR Athlon system...or P4, if they manage to get up to 2 GHz on .18 micron, and you have a fetish for intel.

I have pretty much the same config as you except it's a 550 Athlon, and 192 MB RAM. I've decided to wait until mid-year to get a new system.

That system is almost identical to mine. If you don't mind OCing, you should be able to get that 550E processor to 733MHz (133MHz FSB with maybe a core voltage boost). This particular board seems sensitive to RAM configurations when running at higher FSB frequency, so you may have to populate RAM slots in a certain order. Most GeForce card will run at 89MHz so I think you are ok there (My CLAP have been running at 89 MHz AGP for the past 9 months or so with no problems).

If you are into gaming, I would highly recommend staying with the P3 for the SSE capability. Some games may perform additional lighting calculations with SSE instruction set which makes the objects in the 3D world brighter and more distinct.

My System Spec:

Abit BX6r2
P3 700E at 933MHz 1.75v core (previously 550E at 733)
Creative Lab Annihilator Pro GeForce DDR (89MHz AGP)
256MB 133MHz RAM
Vortex 2 based sound card (MX 300)
