Howdy all.

Well, I tried to learn blade hands. A really nice character going here as
well (same one I posted about earlier).

Please...check out the mutations and let me know if I stand a chance!
I've not found any potions of cure mutation yet...

I don't think trying to get a minotaur to cast blade hands was the
brightest of ideas.

Ack! You practiced with wimpy spells, didn't you?

For future reference, don't try casting high level spells till they're at
"Fair", and when you're practicing spells, stop every now and then and rest
for a couple hundred turns to clear out the magic contamination.

That's by my count, 26 mutations? I didn't even know that was possible.

Quaff potions of mutation if you can find them. Maybe even make yourself
glow again -- this can't get much worse. It might be nice -- just for the
glory -- to try to get the last level of "your body is detiorating", so you
could have all of the bad ones.

Um, there's a "Normalization" card in decks of wonder that cures a bunch at
a time. I think you're doomed, though.

What version are you playing? I ask because one version had a bug in the
contamination code that greatly increased the number of nasty mutations
you got from magical contamination. I strongly suspect that that's the
version you're playing.

Indeed. Spells aren't always the best idea... This reminds me of
something from a while ago, where someone suggested that memorizing
(certain) spells will get you out of everything... (While the spells
mentioned then were different, the lesson is the same.)

It was at least partly humorous, but true nonetheless. It's _not_ an
exaggeration, thus I'll repeat it for everyone who's not seen it:
_______________________________________________________________

Mechanoid <necromancer_90@hotmail.com> screeched:
> if you can memorize these you can out-manouver, out-run, and out
> -escape *any* enemy you run into.

In your dreams. In truth, you'll end up forgetting to breathe while
you're starving quickly due to lack of greens, if you don't just
collapse under your badly deformed body-weight, while randomly
teleporting around into ever new but ever so slightly familiar
territory, which you can't quite make out, which makes you so
furious that you claw at anything that - quite wisely - thinks your
fragile shape is easy prey. Not that you'll be able to cast any more
Haste, due to being dopey, or run fast, due to being overburdened
from weakness, or even fight back, due to being clumsy.

Blink will just land you in the middle of the horde, but they won't
like you despite horns and hooves.

Better not take that picnic in Chernobyl(sp?) in the first place.
_______________________________________________________________

Let this be a lesson for all.

We should do a collective exercise; everyone write across their
monitor in huge red letters: _Beware of Mutations!_

It's probably on the same level of 'resist the temptation' as
Nethack's fountains.

<g>
How about a patch that checks the number of really bad mutations and
adds this rather fitting comment (in another colour) when
appropriate? (Might serve as "Hah! I'll show you!" to some players,
too. If they do survive, it could change to 'You were dead but got
better.' or 'Surprisingly, you survived.' or something. It's like
the comment you get when you check your needed Exp to get the next
level when you're at XL:27, so quite in character with Crawl's
attitude.)

The real question is, why didn't he give up after the first two or
so, though. It's not as if the mutations would go away.

Though I admit I've done the same:

28. 20949 Dread the Deep Elf Wizard (level 12, 58/58 HPs)
Collapsed under their own weight on Lair Level 6.

Mutations & Other Weirdness
Your digestive system is specialised to digest meat.
Your metabolism is lightning-fast.
You are weak (Str -2).
You are dopey (Int -2).
You are clumsy (Dex -4).
Space frequently distorts in your vicinity.
Armour fits poorly on your deformed body.
Your muscles are strong (Str +1), but stiff (Dex -1).
You occasionally forget where you are.
You tend to lose your temper in combat.
Your body is rapidly deteriorating.
Your vision is a little blurry.
You are partially covered in black scales (AC + 1).

I think Identify was the culprit here. And as you see, this guy was
a freaking Deep Elf and a Wizard, no mere dumb fighter...

Well, the dump states beta 26, I figured that was the latest.
I tried to find a buglist online, but couldn't locate anything. One would
thing that the homepage should house such a beast...

Well, RIP Prola. I decided to dive and stay glowing until I either found
potions of cure mutation or mutated into something useful.

Even in my deformed state I could still keep up with most of the monsters.
Eventually it was the rapidly deteriorating body, I ran out of healing
potions.

I did find an amulet of resist mutation. Shame I couldn't wear it about
10000 moves ago.

Definitely learned from that experience!

Love this game :).

Oh, Crawl specializes in doing that again and again. It's by far the
most difficult roguelike I've ever played, and the most satisfying to
beat.

Ah, b26 is IIRC the problematic one. In any other version, ending up
glowing means that you *might* pick up a nasty mutation. In b26, you
*will*. If you've got b26, you need to be extra extra careful...

Not always. It's just the same rate as being cursed by a 3. 4/5
rate IIRC.
Actually the bigger problem is with a mutations when you aren't
glowing yet.
