Ive installed 8 systems so far
All Tbirds and Durons

i have never had a problem blowing one or anything
so easy
the only way something can fry is if u do something foolish, like not grounding the board, setting the voltage to high or physically damaging the cpu

My first Tbird i installed was easy as pie,
pop it in, set the voltage install the board and fan boom done!

geeze, if u are worried at all, pay a computer company $20-30 to install it for you!

I agree, I've put together 3 AMD systems. Mine (TBird 950) and 2 of my friends (Duron 700 both) cause they were scared cause of crap post by some people.

All systems run fine, 3 months and mines still going. over 4 months for my friends.

I agree. I put together AMD systems all day and just currently built my own 1.2GHz system. No problem at all and simple as pie.

I've put together a bit less than 50 systems... I think... Starting from 386.. Even while it's not my work, I still enjoy it. Unless they change something totally on PC-s, once You get the hang of it, U'll get stuck with it.

You order your new pheonix gaming system with AMD 1.2Ghz and GeforeMX video card (yeah thats what they sell for 2,200) and you hook it up real fast.

Whats the first thing you do?

Fire up the system and begin to poke around?
Open the case to verify that the HSF has not come loose due to being larger and heavier than AMD spec HSF?
Reseat the HSF anyway?

Alot of people are orederig pre built systems, these are high risk for problems.

You order a new machine and HSF looks good and you fire it up, everything is working fine you pop out of BIOS and start to boot to CDROM to load OS. CPU burns up. is that your fault because you didnt reseat the HSF? the shippers fault for not putting big RED label on box to reseat HSF?
or possibly a bad HSF?

Ok, so you purchased a new "antec" HSF and you scrape the old tape off the bottom and put on quick silver. pop the HSF on everything looks good. a minute goes by and your system starts acting funny. you go thru alot of BIOS changes and it gets worse as you keep trying. Is the person who installed HSF the problem? or the maker of the HSF?

I have ordered systems and HSF come lose (check new machines before applying power)

I have ordered pre built systems that have burnt 2 mins into turning them on.

Antec HSF suck bad, so the the PSU they make. AVOID

A HSF that is not level will fail.

Basicly if AMD had installed thermal protection, there would be alot more AMD systems in this world. and alot less internet bandwidth wasted on this topic alone.

And its not the end users fault or the installer of the HSF that AMD doesnt have this protection.

Just because you installed a few correctly that everyone else is a moron. HSF install is hook one side, latch the other and check for play and level.

If you think im a liar and this is all made up, just take a minute and read back a few pages on this forum. Its full of posts about this topic.

I had a processor blow two motherboards before I knew it was the processors fault. Stupididty? How did I know the first motherboard failure was caused by that processor? The machine fired up just fine and died minutes later!

Do we have to set the voltage? What I did was just plug all the parts in. I didn't make any change to the motherboard.

"and alot less internet bandwidth wasted on this topic alone."

Funny, I think you and your bud, AMeltD, account for 99.99999% of the bandwidth on this topic.

And if AMD does put thermal protection in their chips, you and AMeltD will just bash them because are just following !ntel. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

What is your point? DELL sells P4 sytems with TNT2 graphics (far worse than geforce2 MXs), and you don't see Anti-Intel people going around, "PENTIUM4 SUCKS BECAUSE IT USES A TNT2!!!" Please make points that are relivant to the topic.

There is an equal chance of the heatsink coming off an Intel system as there is an AMD system. You have no argument.

It's your fault because you're stupid enough to not know how to install a heatsink. Simple as that. It's like suing GM because your son died in an accident, driving one of their vehicles.

Funny how you use the worst heatsink available as an example......

All in all your debate it pretty weak.

I understand Everyones Viewpoint that you should use common sense with your Athlon Tbird; but at the same time i want to point out there is a VERY REAL danger of cpu damage even with some caution.
Obvious example: Evewn Anandtech proclaimed they ended up with a dead Tbird 1 gig and duron 700 after remounting the processors a few times. The Dies are VERY sensitive, and although Stupidity can make things worse, it doesnt take a moron to blow one out (unless you consider the guys at anandtech to be morons)

My point went way over grizleys head.

Pheonix makes gaming systems, for the base model to be 2,200 dollars you should expect Geforce2 Ultra if your getting AMD CPU. Hello 2,200 for AMD system!
That whole pheonix gaming systems is a joke IMO they talk about building the best but they offer crappy parts at high prices.

That base model P4 was what 1,399? that Gefore MX is worth the $800 difference? I dont thinks so.

Reguarding the HSF coming off in shipping, equil chance falling off my ass. WTF kinda stupid stat is that??
You know as well as I do that most AMD systems are ordered with some special HSF combo. not like intel where basic HSF works good. Every AMD system shipped should be checked for HSF postion and angle to be sure that it is level and tight so you dont burn out brand new machines. MUST be done on all AMD systems or pay the price for AMD NOT HAVING THERMAL PROTECTION.

Grizzely I hope you don't live in dusty/dirty area where your fan will get filled with debris that will cause your HSF to die in less than a year.

My PC sits on the floor, I take a few mins about every 6 months cleaning out my system fans from decent amount of crud build up. how much crud does it take to slow dont the fan enough to burn out the CPU? well you will find out im sure.

Cooking my Intel CPU is not possible unless I apply too many volts to it, or use blow torch directly onto it.

I have a old celeron 300a here with a hole burnt thru the backside of the core from overclocking @ 150 x3 (unlocked)
The CPU still works great @450hmz

Thank you for proving my point even more. You're dissing AMD because one crappy OEM computer maker is charging a lot. Whatever.

2nd, I don't use a fan on my heatsink. I have a huge squirrel cage fan that needs it's own powersupply. I think I'll be fine.

What are you saying Fugger, isn't base a street name for crack? Are you a crack head Fugger? Was your mother abusing drugs? Is that why you act out against society so? I think you should seek councelling, please, before you hurt someone, maybe yourself.

I agree its stupidity if you nuke your socket a cpu. However I did it when I first got my system. :)

But...I've also installed ~20x since (no exageration). I had a guy at a jewelry store grind the golden bridges off, I've taken knifes to it, varsol, lacour remover, sandpaper, you name it I've done it to it...and it still works! :)

I just thought I would add that my PII350 doestn even have a fan, just the sink. Should it have one? it has run for over 2 years without one. The only fan in my whole system is the case fan. Just a word for though, im building a AMD just because I know how much you hate them.

Someday I will stop asking all the questions!
