Making an AMD Barebone System

Forum Old Man/Woman's Club : Other Making an AMD Barebone System

I'm trying to spend around $200-250 on a barebone, however I am prepared to spend a bit more. Basically I'm looking included to have a decent power supply, 4 DDR RAM slots, and decent cooling. Optionally I'd like a good case & cheap upgrades for CD-RW/DVD/Floppy drives. Included in the barebone I need CPU/Case/Power Supply/Heating Solutions

Basically, I'm looking for suggestions. However, I also have a few questions. For the system, I basically want it to be high in quality, but not "very high". I want to run BF2 amoung other graphically intense games with decent FPS at decent resolutions with some eye candy, but nothing great.

Current specs for system:
AGP8x Nvidia GeForce A6600GT
2x Corsair PC3200 512mb "ValueRAM"
Sound Blaster Live!
1 80gig HD
1 120gig HD

I've drawn up a few systems.
All systems include a DVD drive, 3x DDR400 slots, Socket 754, Case Fan, and CPU fan/heatsink. I try to include all the differences in the description.

System 1 $300 United Micro
Black case with 500WT power supply, AMD 64 3000, and a thermal compound.

Case: Mid-Tower 500WT ATX Black
Motherboard: EPoX EP-8KDA3I nFORCE3 250 SC754 3x DDR400 2SATA Lan 6-ch.Audio P80P ATX
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512K 754pin Oem
Cooling Fan: Thermaltake A4006 Heat Sink & Cooling Fan /AMD Athlon 64 & Opteron/
High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound Ceramique 2.5 Gram Tube
DVD ROM: LG 16x DVD ROM IDE INT Black
Accessories Case: Fan Ball Buaring 8cm
Warranty: 1Years Labor,1Year Parts,Lifetime Tech Support (TS)

System 2 $275 United Micro
Black case with 500WT power supply and AMD Sempron 3100 (Basically it's $25 cheaper for a AMD Sempron 3100 over a 64, minus the thermal compound)

Case: Mid-Tower 500WT ATX Black
Motherboard: EPoX EP-8KDA3I nFORCE3 250 SC754 3DDR400 2SATA Lan 6-ch.Audio P80P ATX

DVD ROM: LG 16x DVD ROM IDE INT Black
Accessories: Case Fan Ball Buaring 8cm

System 3 $225 Ikon Technologies
Biege case with 430WT power supply & 3000 Sempron.

Case: Mid Tower 101, 6 Bays, **430W** Power Supply P4/AMD/AMD64BIT Approv.,Front USB
Motherboard: MSI K8T Neo FSR, Socket 754, VIA K8T800 Chipset, FSB800, DDR400, IDE/SATA+RAID, GLAN, 6ch Audio
CPU: Sempron 3000, Socket 754 333MHz Bus, 256KB Cache, Box
Case Cooling Fan
DVD ROM: MSI 16xDVD, INT, IDE, Biege 30 d warr.

System 4: $255 Ikon Technologies
Same as System 3 except for black case, 350WT power supply, & includes CD-RW & DVD combo (Black)

System 5: $270 Ikon Technologies
Biege case with 430WT power supply & AMD 64 3000

Case: Mid Tower 101, 6 Bays, **430W** Power Supply P4/AMD/AMD64BIT Approv.,Front USB
Motherboard: MSI K8T Neo FSR, Socket 754, VIA K8T800 Chipset, FSB800, DDR400, IDE/SATA+RAID, GLAN, 6ch Audio
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000 2.0GHz CPU Socket 754
Cooling Fans: Case Cooling Fan & Cooling Fan for Socket 754 AMD Athlon 64 CPU's
DVD ROM: MSI 16xDVD, INT, IDE, Biege 30 d warr.

I really like the price of System 3 and it comes with pretty much what I want. Suppousively the Sempron 3100 is a big step over the 3000, but "Ikon" doesn't supply them. D'oh! Still, I can get the 3100 as well as a black case for about (and everything else) for about $50 more from United Micro. So I'm curious whether the Sempron 3100 is more powerful than the Sempron 3000.
I originally wanted to get an AMD 64, however since 64 usage is so far in the future I just don't know if it's worth ~$30 to get practically no performance gain over a Sempron. At least that's what I've read so far.

Any thoughts on the different prices or the differences between 64/Sempron would be good. Don't really want to go with a higher socket because I usually upgrade every 2 years or so and try to spend as little as possible. So I get the latest technology but not the greatest. ;) So far it's worked out pretty well, and it goes perfectly with my budget (not worrying about having to save up for a fair amount of time for a $1k computer).

Will you walk into my parlour?" said the Spider to the Fly,
'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is down a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to shew when you are there."
Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "to ask me is in vain,
For who goes down your winding stair can ne'er come out again."

"I'm sure you must be weary, dear, with soaring up so high;
Will you rest upon my little bed?" said the Spider to the Fly.
"There are pretty curtains drawn around; the sheets are fine and thin,
And if you like to rest awhile, I'll snugly tuck you in!"
Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "for I've often heard it said,
They never, never wake again, who sleep upon your bed!"

Said the cunning Spider to the Fly, " Dear friend what can I do,
To prove the warm affection I 've always felt for you?
I have within my pantry, good store of all that's nice;
I'm sure you're very welcome -- will you please to take a slice?"
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "kind Sir, that cannot be,
I've heard what's in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!"

"Sweet creature!" said the Spider, "you're witty and you're wise,
How handsome are your gauzy wings, how brilliant are your eyes!
I've a little looking-glass upon my parlour shelf,
If you'll step in one moment, dear, you shall behold yourself."
"I thank you, gentle sir," she said, "for what you 're pleased to say,
And bidding you good morning now, I'll call another day."

The Spider turned him round about, and went into his den,
For well he knew the silly Fly would soon come back again:
So he wove a subtle web, in a little corner sly,
And set his table ready, to dine upon the Fly.
Then he came out to his door again, and merrily did sing,
"Come hither, hither, pretty Fly, with the pearl and silver wing;
Your robes are green and purple -- there's a crest upon your head;
Your eyes are like the diamond bright, but mine are dull as lead!"

Alas, alas! how very soon this silly little Fly,
Hearing his wily, flattering words, came slowly flitting by;
With buzzing wings she hung aloft, then near and nearer drew,
Thinking only of her brilliant eyes, and green and purple hue --
Thinking only of her crested head -- poor foolish thing! At last,
Up jumped the cunning Spider, and fiercely held her fast.
He dragged her down his winding stair, into his dismal den,
Within his little parlour -- but she ne'er came out again!

And now dear little children, who may this story read,
To idle, silly flattering words, I pray you ne'er give heed:
Unto an evil counsellor, close heart and ear and eye,
And take a lesson from this tale, of the Spider and the Fly.

Okay, once you get this "I'm cooler than you are" sort of reflex out of your system, I'm looking for some helpful replies.

Thanks.

also,

you might want to check into getting a 939 motherboard instead of the 754, im sure that the 754 is dead architecture and wont be too useful when upgrading.

Sempron has a smaller cache and a Socket 939 will give you better upgradeability, It will give you dual channel memory and PCIe, plus you can install a dual core CPU in the future with only a BIOS upgrade.
Don't get upset with all the bashing you're going to get here in the OTHER it's just the nature of the forum.

Personally I would never spend my money on a barebones system, and there are probably very few here at these forums that have done that, I have one friend of mine that did, and only one item of all he bought lasted, it cost him twice as much over time because he ended up replacing literally everything.

IMO, You would do yourself a great favor to forget the barebones idea and look to the Newegg available online deals and specials, you get what you pay for in this world and a lot of barebones deals are literally to unload products that didn't sell too well and are sitting on their shelves that they are stuck with in inventory.

If you're dead set on putting together a barebones system then you in my book are a good candidate to just go out and get yourself a Dell, at least you'd have some descent warranty if nothing else.

At least look at a good case and brand name power supply, so later upgrades don't require you to buy all that over again, and look at the AMD XP options available that just may give you more for your money, and not leave you with regrets further down the road.

You can also put yourself a descent AMD XP system together that will do everything you said you want to do and more.

Suggestions:
Antec case and P/S
AMD XP 3200+ Barton
NF2 M/B[To take advantage of the RAM you already have]
And a good quality DVD Burner of your choice

If you're still determined to go barebones then also look here because not every place on the internet are good places to do business with, and I have purchased some things from this website but not the sites you referenced. But some others here may have bought from those sites, and can give you the OK on purchasing from the sites you gave reference to.

I'm good, I wonder sometimes PF how much damage we do to our eyes with long term computer use staring at computer monitors for hours on end, its got to accelerate negative effects on our eyes.

You're a young dude, what exactly is the surgery going to correct with your eyes?

I had laser cateract surgery back in January and to tell you the truth I got quite apprehensive before the time arrived, but I was worried for nothing, it went so fast being prepped for the surgery lasted 3 times longer than the surgery did, and being able to see clearly is like WOW! Definitely worth it, try not to worry, even though thats easier said than done sometimes, if the mind doesn't have something to be concerned about it will invent it!

Hope all goes well through it all! Ry

I was actually looking from pricewatch.com and only from sellers that had 4+ stars rating. I was considering putting together the case, power supply, motherboard, cpu, and cooling together myself, but last time that happened it didn't end too well. So I don't mind paying a wee bit more to get someone else to do it for me. But perhaps I've learned from my mistakes and can go for round two, however I prefer doing that on computers I'm not going to use all the time (older ones).

I've been looking a bit more and have found a pretty good deal at SMKSuperStore.com
Barebones Kit w/ AMD Athlon 64 3000
ECS 755-A2 Socket 754 Athlon64 DDR333 8X AGP Motherboard
ATX 350w Mid-Tower w/Front USB (Beige)
Basic / Generic Fan/Heatsink (40mm)
Integrated 6 Channel Audio
1 Year Warranty
For $220 or so.

Now, the motherboard is kinda scaring me. In the description it says it supports DDR400, as well as the manfacturer's website, but the name says DDR333. And that's scary. So I might upgrade the mobo to something else.
But besides that, it's a very lowcost system. And AMD 64 (retail) costs about ~$140 - so for $75 I'm getting a cheap mobo, case, power supply, cooling, ect. I'm willing to take such as a small risk, as the cost of the CPU covers most of it.

I want the PC to run well, I just don't need to upgrade it. Generally when I upgrade my CPU I upgrade my mobo, Mothercard, and RAM too. I just make a new system every 2 or so years or so, and then give/sell my old system to a relative or friend.
