HP Compaq nx9030 HDD issues

Hi everyone,

I have an HP Compaq nx9030 notebook and the HDD has died on me last week. Its making a grinding noise and the OS is not booting up and I can't read the contents of the drive when I boot a Linux LiveCD. According to the quickspecs (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11997_div/11997_div.HTML) it takes up to 60GB 4200rpm HDDs, but they are very very hard to find nowadays here in my country. So I'm wondering, if I put an 80GB or 120GB 5200rpm HDD, will the notebook read it normally or will there be issues just because of the size? Thanks in advance for your attention!

What country are you in? We can take a look around to see if there are any websites that ship internationally so you can get the proper hard drive.

I'm in Caracas, Venezuela. I tried some local stores to no avail Will truly appreciate if you can look that up for me

It can handle a bigger hard drive. I've upgraded that exact model with an 80GB with no problems. Just remember it's an ATA drive. Even though Newegg won't ship there, this is the drive I installed:

I have the exact same note book, the Compaq nx9030. I put a 100GB 7200 RPM HD in it, no problems. It is the same as any PC, the higher the RPM, the better. Make sure you keep your HD caddy and the adapter on the end of your old HD. Have no fear my friend. You can get bigger but be aware that the SATA HD's are cheaper once you get to that larger size and of coarse our computers only accept the ATA type. Be careful what you get.
