I was browsing through some spoilers regarding Crawl gods, and they
mentioned that N.X. will grant a portable altar when "petitioned" by
his followers. Does this mean that I WON'T have to keep dragging
corpses and loot to the Ecumenical Temple, or do I still need to keep
doing that for a while? Thanks in advance...

Yes. You'll want to pray a few times right after signing up with
Nemelex until He gives you the portable altar.

But how much is a 'few' times? I tried this at least 10 times and still
didn't get the portable altar... Then I cleared 3(!) levels and was
dragging all the junk to his altar in the temple until he finally
granted me the portable altar.

IIRC (and I may well NOT RC), the trick is to pray a lot even when there's no
reason to -- each prayer amounts to a chance of getting the altar.

My last Nemelexite got the altar on his first prayer.

IIRC you can use card deck to improved terms with him before praying

You can, but by the time you've received a deck of cards from him, you're
likely to have received a portable altar anyway, no?

I almost mentioned them. However, the spoilers say NX "appreciates the use of
his gifts," not "appreciates the use of decks of cards in general," so I don't
know...

I had enough of munchkinism when playing ADOM, so it will be awhile before I
can stomach something so munchkiny as NX, even for test purposes. :)

IIRC from the source code (few years ago).. yes, it likes the use of
cards in general not only its given ones.

[Getting a portable altar from NX... helps to please him, yes?... so, will
the use of all decks please him, or just the ones he gifts you?]

Thanks for the heads-up!

There is one other factor to consider, though: one's first randomly found
deck of cards can sometimes come quite late -- much later, in fact, than
one's first gift deck from NX and/or his gift of a portable altar. (I played
with NX twice, and one of those two times I, two, got my altar on my first
prayer.)

By the way that some readers (I mean humans) erase NG messages rather than
archiving them, and would have NO IDEA what this thread is about, since they
aren't getting it threaded, but as isolated messages. I am not among such
people, but they are out there.
