Just bought a new sys , and i have some things to ask. Like, why in God's name may pc reboots when it has it's lan cable connected? It happen's like this: i have a lan cable connected to my modem at one end and to my pc (Marvell Gigabit Ethernet Card on board) at the other. when my computer get's into windows and want's to start lan services respectively to show the lan connection icon on tray it just crashes and reboots. this started to happen after i renamed my computer. I'm thinking he just doesn't like the new name I gaved him... Serious now, why does this happen? And another thing i would like to ask is if i really need a 24 pin psu or adapter. Cause it seems to work just fine with my 20 pin 400 watt psu. (excepting the lan s#it u know) This is my first 24 pin atx connector mobo so i am a little bit confused. Forgot to mention that if i leaved the cable unplugged in my pc it works just fine, i can even connect it back after the complete boot.

Err there is not enough room to help you here.

Stay in school!!

NO!! you do not need the 24 pin use the 20 pin Power supply cable.

You need to go into your computer BIOS and enable the onboard LAN card from the sounds of it it's disabled or you need to load the drivers for it off the motherboard CD and probably your GART drivers and sound drivers.

If you have a retail computer and as you say and you just got it take it back and say the biotch crashes and make them fix it!!

When you renamed your computer you lost Administrator privileges and screwed your options to have full control over your hard drive and all files on it. XP install.

If you were an IT manager then you would not have asked 2 very simple questions.

Quote :

(1) Do I need the 20 or 24 pin connector ?

(2) I'm thinking he just doesn't like the new name I gaved him...

LOL dude what IT diploma was that school from ? I am glad they "gaved" you a diploma ?

what i wanted to say is:
1 - if i really need the 24 pin psu, or will the 20 pin do the job

2 - it was a joke

Dude, relax. You don't need to be so mean. ;)

thanks,

first off, you might want to check to see if any of the caps near your onboard lan are grounding to the metal casing sometimes that happens and causes units to short, easy way to do that is just boot the computer and wiggle the lan cable in the slot; if it reboots, thats the problem but i dont think that would be the case seeing as you get all the way into windows or whathave you.

the 20 pin connector is easy to do, just plug it in normally, and then plug in the 4pin yellow and black molex(most psu's have em) right beside it; it will fit into the slot and you wont have to use an adapter.

from the way you described it, i would say you have some kinda of power failure or ram failure; due to the reboots(most likely power, imho)

you can also try just adding one device at a time during boots to see if you get any failures, ie. boot it up with only cpu, ram, harddrive, video card. tehn add your dvdrw, and so on.

good luck and keep us posted.

The thing is like this. Everything worked just fine until i renamed my computer due to a windows system error(the name was already on the network). Now I'm using my pc as it follows: unplug lan cable, i wait until windows completely boots, respectively loads all it's networking components, plug my lan cable and everything works just fine. I can't reinstall windows for cause i'm working on a project right now, so....

the 4 pin adapter doesn't fit, and i'm already using it to power the cpu.

so the after the rename, things went haywire. thats kinda wild.

what you could do is leave your lan cable in and thru services.msc(thru your Start > Run) turn it to manul start for all your network services and then write a small batch file that will load all your network services after windows has properly loadaed.

that could be a simple workaround for now.

you have a seperate four pin molex(female) on the board?
edit: i see looking at the mobo its right next to your cpu.

Reply to mrface

i would still unplug it from the the seperate molex and run it thru the 24pin(if it will fit); your 20 pin should only fit into the 24female one way leaving four open pins, it should fit in there, if not then just leave it on the cpu.

kinda odd that it doesnt fit its connector should have only one way it can go in.

i have one adapter i could use to get one extra 4 pin connector. are u really sure i should do that? i mean plug another 12 volts on my mobo, cause i don't wan't to get it fried or something. what are those extra 4 pins on the atx connector for anyway?

INTEL, ASUS, NVIDIA, GEIL

Reply to VENOX

oh no, just plug in one 4pin connectors not both(dont add one from another psu or whatever).

like the one that runs next to your cpu ( i looked at a pic on google images) you shuld be able to take it out and rotate it counterclockwise one quarter of a turn and it should fit on either the right or the left sid of your 24 pin connector,(dependant on which side is freed up from the 20 pin molex.) does that make sense( i know im probably not making too much, sorry  )

Reply to VENOX

hell, you couldnt go wrong with that i dont guess, heheh. but if you dont feel comfortable with changing connectors for now and you can get it running(via certain steps of course) i would keep it that way and get a proper psu, that would be ideal( )

Thats cool, you're not alone!

Man they're just pulling your chain don't sweat it, this is the Other Section most down here are here because they're fed up, or taking a break from helping people. You said you had the thing going fine until you renamed it, what actually did you rename, the computers network ID, or your login Name, I may have missed it but what OP/SYS are you running?

Well either disable the Ethernet Lan in the CMOS if its onboard, or remove the Lan card from the machine completely, and try rebooting and see if it will come all the way back up, if you get it to come all the way up, save your important data before going any further.

I have a Thermaltake the main connector is 20pin and it comes with an adapter to change 20pin to 24pin, so really all you need to buy is the 20 to 24 adapter.

First and foremost you really should read the first post in the "sticky" (the first thread in this section) before continuing any farther.

In so much as your LAN prob. I would think that you have already deleted and reloaded the driver for your card with the latest version driver from the mfg. web site.

If not try that and it probably will fix the reboot issue.

OK you show 1 200gb HDD and you're running XP Pro and Linux, so you did the renaming in XP Pro, that could possibly be affecting the communication with the Linux Swap partition.

Have you tried to rename it back to what it was? Or do you not know what it was named?

If you get the machine up and running save your important project you were working on first of all before you do anything else.
