Hi,

I'm about to upgrade my CPU from P3-650 (100 Mhz) FC-PGA to a P3-1000. My DIMMS are 100 Mhz, but I'm having trouble finding 100 Mhz P3 1000's.

So what I want to know is whether it's possible/advisable to run a 133 Mhz CPU with 100 Mhz RAM. If that wouldn't work, is it possible/advisable to run the 133 MHz CPU at 100 MHz? Does anyone know what multipliers this will work with if any?

Thanks in advance,
Simon.

Don't plan on running a 1Ghz 133Mhz fsb chip at 100mhz. Just do the math. The chip multiplier, which is locked, is set at 7.5. 7.5 * 133 = 1Ghz. If you slow the fsb to 100Mhz, you get 7.5 * 100 = 750Mhz. That a 25% performance hit!

Why not just buy new RAM? It is cheap today, you can get generic 256M for $70, or name brand for $110.

I'd get the 1Ghz 133 chip, and new 133 RAM as well.

the problem with that is the is that it brings the question can the moter hand 133 reliably for a long time

try going to mwave.com they have a 1ghz with 100 mhz fsb on the ordering list
they are a pretty good shop form what i've heard
but this will only help if you live in or around the US

I think the MB should be ok with 133 Mhz, since it's fairly decent (A-Bit BE6-2). Unless there are issues with all 133 MHz cpus?

I presume just running the chip at 133*7.5 with 100 MHz RAM is unstable?

If I can't find the 100 Mhz CPU somewhere in the UK, I'll just have to buy the new RAM as well.

Another question I thought of, is SECC2 just a different design for the plastic CPU casing? Basically, will a SECC2 chip work with a standard (ie slightly dated BE6-2) slot-1 motherboard?

Thanks again.
