Whats is use of Direct x file?

Hello,
m having problem with my PC. i've installed NFS game but after installation when i start game it shows a note "A direct x or graphics card required", so pls telll me what should i do?

Update your directx. If that doesn't work, make sure your video cards meets the minimum system requirements for the game.
