No sound on my laptop but with headset there is sound

i have a dell 1420 laptop there is no sound when i play any audio but with headset i can hear, what might be the found and how to fix it

laptop speakers might be broken

Check the default playback device. Start search sound.

Maybe the headphone jack is messed, but I do NOT think they use switches in headphone jacks to mute speakers any more.
