Is this dumb? I have a 550mhz p3 system
that works ok, but I see that my mobo
will take a 1ghz p3 (100mhz fsb). The
price is down to $274 for a 1gh p3 100fsb.
I run some cpu intensive programs, but
I am wondering if it is worth it to
upgrade - whay are your experiences?

If your m/b will do 133 with a 1/4 PCI divider then I'd suggest a PIII-700E which would run at 933 at a 133FSB. That should put you back about US$140 at most.

If possible, that (with the 700E at 933) would be the way to go. Cheap and a great performer.
If not, I don't see how a 1GHz processor would be bad neither :)

You really don't need the upgrade, but if you want one anyway, the 700 is a good deal, but if your heart is set on the 1GHz, the 133 bus chip is cheaper and performs better, assuming your motherboard supports 133FSB. What kind of motherboard do you have?

HI,
you MB likely does not support 133 bus though it is possible

if you assume you need a 100 mhz bus coppermine,P3 then
the 1 ghz has been phased out by INTEL and is impossible to get and very pricey, some $100 more than same CPU at 133 bus..we tried for a client last week :(

the 800-933 series is a better bet..for 100 FSB
make sure you have a switching voltage regulator on you MB and make sure there is a bios upgrade for it for that speed

hope that helps
best and good luck

My motherboard is a recent supermicro (a replacement for
one that went bad). After I set everything back up, I went
to their website to get the latest BIOS, and then I saw that
it could support a 1ghz PIII, even though this mobo only
supports 100mhz FSB. It turns out that the voltage reg
on this recent mobo is already set to go for the 1ghz,
and I have flashed the latest BIOS, and the tech supoort
at SUPERMICRO tells me that my mobo model has been tested
successfully with the 1ghz PIII (100mhz FSB). They have
these 100mzh FSB 1ghz PIII's at computergate for $276, so
I am just wondering if the extra speed would be worth it.
I am currently running a 550mhz and I really don't have
any complaints, but some of the video progs do take a
long long long time to run (avi to mpeg, recompense avi,
and so forth). If it only speeds it up a few percentages,
then I will really feel silly. If it doubled the speed,
then it might be worth it. I was just wondering if anyone
had any experience upgrading from the 500mhz range to
the 1ghz range, leaving all else as is (100mhz FSB, cas3
ram, udma33, etc.). I sort of lean toward thinking it
would be better to just go along as I am, and wait until
I really need an upgrade, and then go whole hog with
a whole new system - but, you know the bug we get with
the prospect for whizbang speed.

Well, if you think about it, conversions such as you mentioned would be much faster since they rely on the processor.

HI,
yes the SUPERMIcro boards are excellent , some fo the best we have seen to date, we have sold thousands and have been using them in our workstations since 1994..

So you should have problem using the 1 GHZ CPU.
the CPU should almost double your performance in many apps and games, video and the like.

I would say on CPU intensive stuff you speed gain should range from 50% -85% +

also disk loading times if you have ODE should improve a little, and cache fetches should be better with the new cache as well

I would get one if I were you .
enjoy the new speed my friend, at least you were smart enough to get an INTEL CPU :))

Ok guys, I went and did it
and ran my own home-grown
little test. I run a little
REXX program (interpretter)
that invokes a MASM program
that does a bit of floating
point and integer stuff.
I can adjust the number of
outer iterations at will, so
I ran it for ten thousand times
and marked the elapsed time with
both the 550 mhz PIII and the
1 ghz PIII. The difference is
more than worth it:
Elapsed time with 550 mhz PIII = 2 min 44 sec
Elapsed time with 1 ghz PIII = 1 min 11 sec
I took a hit on the price ($276 from computergate),
but it came all boxed up, with the fan already
attached, and it was a trouble-free replacement
and I am really glad I did it. I am also glad
that supermicro packaged this motherboard ready
to run the CPU at that speed and I also got the
board from computergate for less that $100.
Ain't computin' fun! (when things go well....)

Question:

My 550 mhz PIII runs at around 37 degrees C,
and the 1 ghz PIII runs at 40 degrees C.
Is that a problem? or is that normal
and expected due to the greater speed?

Littleberry

Reply to littleberry

that is about normal, a little high. how is your case cooling?

Reply to Rick_Criswell

i wouldn't say that's high. besides, p3's have thermal sensors built in. so are you gonna ebay the 550? you could make your cost even lower for the 1ghz by selling it off.

HI
good man,

I told you it would be worth it,
even better than I had said over 100% faster

pentium's scale well

that is VERY cool, don't sweat it, it can goto 60 C without any worries
