Help me explain why the rubber feet are needed!!!!

Ok I need help explaining why the rubber feet are needed on the Thunderbird's. I am having an arguement with someone....

To stabilize the CPU fan so it won't tether and chip or wear away the corner of the flip chip.

What BGates2B said, the rubber feet help keep the heatsink level prior to being clamped. This protects the edges and the corners of the core.
