Apparently they're carrying on as they intended to in the original schedule. Perhaps, they're giving into popular demand.

According to my sources,
teh Palimino is merely a minor revision for athlon to solve the terrible HEAT problems and yields associated with
production,
as I understand it, it will diffferent only in voltage,
and size, with maybe a minor cache revision.
no major artecture changes apparent

I understood that Palimino was going to phase out Tbrid at similiar mhz first then start to go high, so solve heat issues, and power supply issues, as well documented byt the load the Tbird takes on standard non certified atx power supplies..

so I think the PALIMINO will debut at 1.2\1.3 using the
"c" core of Athlon, and then move to 1.4 in July\AUG.

I also understand the the Athlon's interal architecture
like P3 cannot go much past 1.7 without a major ground up overhaul. it will need a longer pipe, more instructional
ability etc or the law of diminishing returns will kick in and there will not be much increase in performance
hense why INTEL moved to ground up new P7 core of P4.

anyway, hope it happens as it keeps INTEL on its toes :)
best

Hey, this is the first post I've read from you that I
haven't felt an urge to rebuke anything you've said :)

I have to make one comment though... I highly doubt
that AMD will try to push the Tbird core (same core
that is running Palimino) upto and past 2Ghz. Considering
that their roadmap has them aggressively pushing the
Hammer series of processors its likely that they'll
"kill off" the current line much like what Intel is
doing with the P4 in order to make room for Itanium.

cheers

That's right. I think it's going to have thermal protection (hopefully) and it will be much easier to cool (= better overclocking!! ). THey didn't really need a large overhaul in the K7 architecture, since it is so advanced it can handle the speeds.

AMD has been very tightlipped about the Palomino. We know it will use isotopically pure silicon; that has been confirmed. However there are also reports of an improved Branch Prediction Unit, the addition of two stages to the pipeline, along with other small tweaks. While adding stages to the pipeline seems far fetched, an improved BPU is plausible. Since AMD says virtually nothing about the Palomino we'll just have to wait and see.

" use isotopically pure silicon " ... just a rumour as far as I know .. what is your source?.

I hope the new CPU will support hardware prefetch which will deliver more of the DDR 266 potential performance

Hey! you're not yoda! if you were you would've said:

"about thermal protection, I forgot."

instead of:

"I forgot about thermal protection."

Imposter! Imposter!

With its lower power requirements, and lower heat dissapation, it does make some sense concentrating more on the mobile side of things.
