Dimension 4600C Modem Problem

Hi, A friend is having a problem with their conexant modem and connecting to
aolhell. The modem does not dial out it reports as not connected or in use.
Dell diagnostics fails and reports modem is in use by another program or
cannot open that port. It is set to com3, which appears correct and shows
no conflicts. I tried to right click and close all the systray clock items,
but no luck.

Funny thing is in msconfig selective startup is checked and only load system
services is checked. All of the rest, system.ini, win.ini and startup are
unchecked. I had them recheck at least startup, but that didn't work. They
said they never touched msconfig, but obviously someone did! Could this be
the problem? Uninstall AOLhell and reinstall? Replace modem? Any
thoughts? Thanks.

Folks,

Forgive me if these days when I hear of lost connectivity my brain
automatically screams "SPYWARE!", or some sort of infection or involvement.
I've just dealt with too many poorly protected systems of late.

One was so badly hosed that Internet Explorer couldn't grab an internet
connection (that was clearly present) from either a dialup modem OR via
ethernet/DSL

I'm scanning that muthah with anything and everything updated I have, and
see if a restore rollback won't help.

Start over with a Zoom external modem. Or better yet DSL if you can
afford the monthly $.
Been there done that with Conexant Dell original equip..... Kill all
the conexant stuff after you install. Use the conexant card as a paint
scraper.
Wouldn't hurt to do a thorough virus check, spyware check and fix etc
etc. Recommend a nice Anti virus free download AVG from
www.grisoft.com automatic and free updates.
