Why doesn't Dell offer the +/- writers for DVD? They aren't more expensive.

Because Dell is a member of the DVD+RW consortium.

They *are* more expensive because royalties have to be paid to both
formats' patent holders. In the aftermarket, you don't find single
format drives because the incremental cost for dual format is so small
nobody would bother, but if you are buying millions of drives it makes a
big difference!

If you need the "-" format, just buy the system without the DVD burner
and put a dual format burner in yourself.

Hardware Guy, why is +RW the superior format? I'm not quarreling, I just
want to know and understand the reason it is better.

You can flash upgrade (for free) the NEC 2100AD (bundled with some new
Dimensions) to read -R/-RW and +R Dual Layer disks...

You mean 'burn'. It can already read them without the hacked
firmware.
