Laptop LCD and HDD failure

My laptop's LCD has been broken for about a month and I've solved it by using an external monitor, the problem is my laptop won't post on the external monitor until it boots into an OS. A few days ago, my hard disk failed, I have my Windows DVD, but no backup, how can I solve my problem? I have an ASUS G71x and can provide more information if asked.

Have you tried hooking up your laptop HDD with another system yet?
It might be something other than a complete HDD failure.
Attaching the laptop HDD as the 2nd HDD in another system might let you get access to the files you need to back up.
