I just got a new Radeon 8500le 64mb agp card and now my fps in counter strike have drooped to like 12 if there is some action goin on. My old card a voodoo 5 5500 AGP ran at a pretty constant 50 frames per second. Anyone have any ideas on how to improve my frame rates. I tried the ATI_NPATCH 0 command in the console and the ati fix released from sierra neither one helped me at all. Thanks for any help.

sys specs:
800mhz Athlon
Windows 2000
320mb pc133 ram
800*600-Opengl with latest official ati drivers

Hmm, that is definitely a problem. That Radeon should tear Counter-Strike up.

What sort of "features" do you have enabled? FSAA? That true-form thingy Radeons can do? Anisotropic filtering? If any of these, disable them one by one and see if the situation improves.

If not - I hate to suggest this, but I will say that a complete HD format and a clean OS install would fix any driver/compatibility problems. I tend to do a complete format maybe 3-4 times a year to keep my system "extra lean".

Sorry I can't be more help - perhaps someone else has an idea?

I justed installed windows 2000 when i got my video card. I had FSAA and all other things turned off. As a matter of fact i turned them on last night to see how many fps i lost and it caused the fps to increase to a constant 100 which is very weird but the game looks really blurry with FSAA turned on.

Here's an idea:

Check to see if VSync is enabled. If your monitor is set at 100 hz, then that would explain both the constant 50 then the constant 100 FPS.

You can disable it if you want, although I find the "tearing" present without VSync to be rather annoying. If VSync is the problem, you might also try playing around with your monitor refresh rate - the key would be to find the highest refresh rate where the card could consistently render that many frames per second (for me, the sweet spot is 70 hz, 70 fps).

Vsync is off and my refresh rate for my monitor is 65hz i believe. I still dont know what is wrong with it but at this point i dont care i get atleast 30fps so i dont care. Although it would be nice to get the fps i deserver.

Weird, I can run 4X AA and 16X Aniso, and Truform and get a constant 100fps. Something is definitely wrong. Did you install the R8500 card right way? Did you reformat? It's probably some sort of driver conflict.

i did a total format and reinstall of windows when i got the card. so i dont see how a there would be any driver conflicts. Ive noticed it seems to drop a lot in frames per second when there are alot of edges (ie boxes, ledges, etc.) but i still dont know why.

Im downloading the new catalyst drivers ati just released maybe they will help out.
Edited by muc0n on 06/13/02 11:41 PM.

The new catalyst drivers improved my fps by 10-15 and it increased my 3dmark score by 150 points. Does a score of 5318 sound about right for a 800mhz athlon 320mb of ram and a radeon 8500le?

there is a command you can type in the console to get your fps in HL. its "net_graph 1" or something similar. there are web pages that list common commands like that...

w/ a R8500 card, u deserve a frame rate of 100.
well i was in the same situation as you are now. picked up a nice retail 8500 card from the store shelf, thought i could kick all those players who use geforce 3 or better gf4 very bad on cs. however, i got 1ow fps around 30 at the time. but after some strenuous settings i made, it improved to its full performance that i deserve. lucky? i dunno. but here i can only tell you the settings i made that i remerber now:
- open-gl mode @ wutever solution you use normally
- set the monitor refresh rate to its max
- set the connection type during the network servers list screen to LAN or T1
- turn on the v-sync
- ...etc

sry i can only recall these..hope it helps~@@~
