I am currently running an ABIT BX6, MX version BIOS, with a Celeron 333. I want to run a Pentium III, 600E, 100 FSB, Coppermine CPU. The MX BIOS Soft Menu can be set to 600, 100 FSB with a core voltage of 1.7V. When I start the machine with the 600E, with Win98 that was installed previously using the Celeron 333, Explorer fails to run and the message is given, "You must reinstall Windows". This message is consistent and occurs on each attempt. I am able to come up in Win98 Safe Mode.
Is this normal to have to reinstall Win98 or is this a manifestation of a Coppermine CPU motherboard/BIOS problem?
ABIT says that the BX6 using MX will run the Pentium 3 600 CPU. Abit did not specifically include or exclude the Coppermine.
Any help is appreciated.
Have you tried flashing the BIOS to their latest version? And have you installed the latest motherboard drivers in Win98?
If not, try putting the slow chip in, doing these things, and then try putting your P3-600E back in. Maybe that'll keep you from having to reinstall Win98.

Most likely a BIOs issue, if a company says "PIII up to 600", they are refering to the Katmia core. But as long as the proper voltage is supported, a BIOS update should fix the rest. Unless they never released one for it (not a likely problem with Abit methinks). Also, IF the latest bios supports the Coppermine, it should support ALL PIII 100FSB processors, since the multiplier is internal.
I have an ABIT BH6. Although the BIOS allows manual configs up to 800Mhz (if I recall) the mobo will only support Katmai based CPUs which effectively limit me to 600Mhz. I believe this is covered in the FAQ section although it's not too clear in the product specs or the BIOS specs. I'm assuming you're having a similar issue.
Options that I've read about are "slocket" adapters with onboard voltage regulators. You'd need to use a socket CPU but supposedly they overcome the whole Katmai-VS-Coppermine core issue with older slot1 boards.
I believe my ASUS 810-chipset mobo has the same problem.
