[Crawl] Midgame conversion - opinions?

Hey all,

The situation: my promising DSNe has just got his last book from Kikky,
who I think has therefore just outlived his usefulness, except possibly
for the miscast protection. I'm considering renouncing Kikky and
switching to another more useful god, possibly Okawaru (I'm going the
death knight route), and thought this might be good fodder for
discussion.

I'm wondering if the potential benefits of worshipping Okawaru (or
another god) outweigh the disadvantages of ticking Kikky off,
particularly the loss of necromancy miscast protection (I'll be learning
Necromutation soon...), and his retribution (summoning reapers?). I've
caught some discussion on switching gods on this group before; has
anybody made this work in practice? Any opinions on the move?

(I can post a dump if it would help - just thought it might not be fully
pertinent at this point.)
