My neighbor has a Dell notebook with AOL online wireless (free for 6 months).
He told me he has no other router or base, yet he can browse the internet and email.

How does this work? Does the notebook have a built in modem and cell phone?

Most likely he's connecting to a neighbor's unprotected wireless router.

There are also wireless hotspots in numerous places - cafe's, condo's, etc. - and he may be in range of one of them.

I don't think they come with their own cell phone, but definitely the notebook has a wireless network adapter built in.

Obviously the guy is clueless.. either it's the neighbor or he's not really on the internet.. or he has a WAP/WRouter and has no clue what it is..

there are cards you can use that work like cell phones to connect to the internet, they are dog slow though.

He calls it broadband, but I have a 3Mb cable and to me it is dog slow. Anyway his 6 months free are up and I am trying to get him to drop AOL and we can share my connection... Since he lives right across the street.
