I have PC100 memories and want to upgrade the processor. Can I use my PC100 SDRAM with a new PIII EB (FSB 133)? Are there limitations ?
And vice-versa (I have a slot 1 PIII at 100 FSB): Can I use this PIII at 100 FSB with PC133 memories?
Is there total compatibility in these combinations?
Thanks
Unfortunately, whilst you can have the memory running at 133 with a CPU running at 100, you can't do it the other way round (mem @100, CPU @ 133). Saying that, you may well find that the PC100 memory you have will run at 133, though there isn't a way that I know of of telling for certain (if you can let us know the make of the RAM, and possibly a serial number, there may well be guys here who could tell you whether it'll work or not - I've used various makes of PC100 @ 133 without problems in both PIIIs & Athlons)
Best to allow funds for new RAM, buy the processor & plug it in. If the existing RAM is okay, you've saved some cash, else replace the RAM also, and sell the old stuff
You can run your FSB at 133 and your memory at 100 with the Asus CUSL2 and many other i815E chipset motherboards! the 815E is the only chipset I've seen for the PIII that will support this. The case is opposite for the Athlon chipsets, which allow you to run 133 memory speed at 100FSB.
