I've noticed recently that despite killing what I think are fairly
experience rich monsters I don't seem to be gaining any experience.

Just completed the swamp and noticed this. Diving in the dungeon I just
killed two skeletal warriors. Softened them up with fire bolt, then
hacked to bits with my +4 long sword of speed. Experience still shows:

Experience: 15/152043 (5)

Hasn't changed! Just killed another with two fire bolts. Again no
change ot the Experience shown on screen.

You have 5 points of unallocated experience.

a + Fighting Skill 8 (9) h + Spellcasting Skill 11 (3)
b - Short Blades Skill 4 (4) i + Conjurations Skill 14 (0)
c + Long Blades Skill 14 (2) j + Enchantments Skill 10 (0)
k + Fire Magic Skill 14 (7)
d - Darts Skill 1 (5)
l + Invocations Skill 1 (3)
e + Dodging Skill 10 (7) m + Evocations Skill 3 (4)
f + Stealth Skill 7 (4)
g + Stabbing Skill 2 (6)

Is my game ill, or are these guys really not worth a blip on my kill
count?

Save and start the game up again. It could be a memory error or
something.

As well, some things - like plants - dont give anything for being
killed.
It's also possible that whatever exp you could possibly gain are spent
the moment you kill the monster(s)

Strange robes?

h - a +2 helmet (worn)
l - a +1 elven cloak (worn)
r - a +1 pair of boots (worn)
t - a +0 robe of resistance
D - a +3 robe of the Archmagi (worn)
H - a +2 pair of gloves (worn)

Don't think so. I have gained some experience since, killing a bunch of
killer bees:

Experience: 15/152077 (2)

Not much though...

Saved and exited. Loaded it. Killed 1 killer bee, no change. Killed
second, no change. Killed third, jumped to:

Experience: 15/152149 (74)

But then again I never really could figure out how the Crawl experience
was earnt/spent.

Try switching to your robe of resistance, and compare the difference.

Just completed the Swamp and the Snake Pit wearing that Robe! How much
experience must I have lost!

You did read the description of the robe of the Archmagi, right?

Read the description yes. Realised "is only intended for those who have
little left to learn" = "you won't get much experience for your kills
when wearing this" no

Atmospheric descriptions are all very well but a nice: "You earn less
experience for this kill" or whatever message wouldn't have hurt either

Out of interest, has anyone ever worn a robe of the Archmagi
permanently, because they are actually satisfied that they have little,
(or rather, nothing,) left to learn?
