Zot5 was a bit of a challenge, but no where near as scary as the tomb
or hells. Decided to go out with that robe of the archmagi that cost me
so much experience earlier in the game. 2/4 hells and the tomb/slime
pits done for my second win is definitely an improvement. But gave up
on the rest as a) I was getting a bit bored with it, and b) running
dangerously low on food.

Very average AC and Ev for the end game I thought. But nothing better
seemed to turn up. Not sure what to try next to be honest. Anyway
cheers for the advice.

Weird, since my last character is also a HECr, and today I´ve done Dis
and Gehenna, slime, vaults (later going for tomb rune, but it gives me
the creeps) and in the case I win it´ll be also my second win. The
hells and the tomb get a really chunk out of your food. I´m lvl 24
because there were so many shadow dragons that they ate almos all my
Xp. The main difference is that I focused my char in fighting, not in
conjurations. I am alctually using a +8/+9 katana of slicing (found it
+8/+8 in the vaultsand I vorpalized it).

Yeah they're quite fun, I recommend them. I really should have beefed
my fighting more. Never found anything better than my elven long sword
of speed (which to be fair is pretty good), and had a number of
vorpalise weapon scrolls that I would have used had I found a +8,+8
katana! :) Bad luck with the shadow dragons. I hate draining so much
that as soon as I saw them they took the biggest spell I could hurl at
them. And I think I had a very reliable crystal spear before I saw lots
of them, so they didn't stay breathing for long. (didn't see many in
vault 8 as I recall).

As my last winner was pure fighter (with a little bit of evocations
thrown in) the spell casting kinda appealed. To be honest I finished
the game pretty much as a pure spell caster with crystal spear and fire
storm. Very heavy on the food usage though which is why I gave up
trying 2 of the hells and Pan.

So far gotta be happy with my crawling as my 2 winners were back to
back if you exclude pre temple chars. I'm now playing some random
combinations to get an experience for starting off with various
character types. Ghould fighters are really really hard to start off!
Gave up on them really soon. Thinking about trying a staves specialist
but not quite decided on the best viable class. I'm looking for
something that has the potential to be able to survive all the hells
and pan. Which from my last game means being able to take out stuff
without always burning food rations with spells.

Mind you my last game I lost 2 dungeon branches worth of experience
from not realising what a robe of the archmagi does...

Really bad luck with the robe. Although it is kind of cool, I hate it.

My first won game was a... Kobold Thief!!!!. I couldn´t believe
myself it got so good.
And I get spellcasting on every mid-level character, even if it is a
minotaur. I just love the versatility.
I´ve tried ghoul fighters and got kind of angry with them, until I got
one of them past lvl 7. He became very good quickly, and died in the
last level of the slime pits at level 27. He worshipped Xom (don´t
ask, I don´t remember why).
The free resistances are really useful (immune to poison and neg.
energy and resistance to cold), and he gets really cool HP and aren´t
that bad with maces and unarmed. Rotting is not a problem from the mid
to late game.
At first I ditch the sword, and go unarmed until I find a decent mace.
The only bad thing is that they don´t get any mutations :(
Keep trying!!! They are worth it. Oh!, and I´ve thought him
necromantic magic (it is actually pretty good at it).

Now that I remember that was a demonspawn chaos knight (the one with
Xom). The ghoul got around lvl 23, but it was a cool char though

I always wanted to use a staff specialist, but I found that there is no
easy start for them. The best ones with staffs are minotaurs and kenkus
(go with kenkus if you look for versatility or minotaur if you go for
striking power). But you´ll have to find the staff yourself. So, no
easy start.

Trying one now after losing a OgreMage Summoner who for some strange
reason starts with quarterstaff despite being pretty poor with them!
Didn't get all that far but was enjoying call imp and bashing with the
staff when I realised I'd be better off switching to a polearm or even
an axe. Then died when my imps proved no match for the first early ogre
that found me with no method of poisoning them (my usual manner of
dealing with early ogres).

Death dump ID'd this I'd picked up a dozen turns previously:

s - a +2,+0 dwarven battleaxe of flaming

Which I expect on DL4 would have come in rather handy! Ah well back to
the drawing board.

Would you like a copy of the 4.1a (Windows) executable to see what the
new buffed staves look like? E-mailable on request. Kinda frustrating
to
play without Ctrl-O, but exciting.

Sure, I think you have my email address. Should get here zipped.
Probably breaks savefile compatibility I guess?

A bit higher INT and spellcasting might have helped... it's definitely
possible for a pure caster to reach the end of the extended endgame with
enough food, though it's still easier IMO for a fighter, even a
berserker. So I don't agree with Brent's occasionally expressed opinion
that casters have an easier food situation, although fortunately the
changes he made based on that assessment look so minor that I doubt
they'll affect anything but overblown victory dances... which is a
*good* thing, really.

Since you're an ASCII man (TileCrawl already makes staves a bit easier
if you're willing to train unarmed), note that you'll find staves
specialists a lot easier in the new version -- they've been buffed
considerably, and the staff class even gets its own ueberweapon! I'll
leave the exact nature a secret; can't spoil EVERYTHING, you know.

That's more a question of race than class, since over time you can
choose your own focus. Some thoughts:

- kenkus
- minotaurs
- part-melee deep elves (not necessarily a challenge game)
- draconians

Cheers,

e.
