-Crawl- Sometimes I really really hate this game...

I've been trying to start a staves specialist. My latest Kenku
Gladiator was doing quite well and had just found the temple on level 7
and after converting to Ely was looking forward to hopefully seeing the
back of the start of the game. Level nearly cleared, just one fleeing
ice beast to go find and finish off so I thinks.

Find Ice Beast
Sigmund turns up
Run away around a corner
Bash Sigmund a bit
Ogre turns up!
Time to run for the stairs as there are no corridors on this level
Killer Bees suddenly in between me and the stairs!
Dead

GRRRR!!!! So unfair. Nothing I could have done. At least it's more
balanced than the new alpha :)

Moving this up to the top since it's the main reason I wanted to write.
I think this wand, if successful (and hey, you did use a wand of
disintegration IIUC) could have saved you -- a successful enslavement
can kill two birds with one stone: one enemy is out of commission from
enslavement, and a second from dealing with the enslaved monster. Sure
you'd probably have pissed off Elyvilon, but that doesn't matter if
you're dead.

Stream-of-consciousness here... I've always wondered if the armor
penalties to unarmed apply to auxiliary unarmed as well -- in that
case, kenku, and especially kenku with non-two-handed weapons (which
quarterstaves will be in 4.1) would do better to go with lighter armour
unless they plan to seriously work on building Armour skill. Of course
4.1 also has unarmed totally revamped in general, and I'm not at all
oriented in the changes yet. But anybody know offhand how this (armour
and auxiliary unarmed) works in b26?

So close, so close, so close to being able to handle those bees!!

At the same skill level, or before the staves skill caught up? Staves
are more accurate, but don't get the bonuses for 2-handed use of a
hand-and-a-half weapon, which IIRC includes a slight accuracy boost --
don't trust my offhand recollection on this, though.

Been my experience with spearmen too, even deep elf spearmen (run with
the intention of becoming stavesmen). Not quite sure why, though again,
there are various perks for hand-and-a-half, high damage seems to be
quite helpful early on, and (though this doesn't apply for your case)
racial-weapon bonuses also seem to have a significant impact early on.

> B - a +1 leather armour of magic resistance

Totally OT: resistable magic is much less easily resistable in 4.1a...
you'll find yourself actually thinking seriously about wearing items of
magic resistance.

Disintegration doesn't miss -- although Sigmund is exceptionally magic
resistant IIRC... if so, then best to to use the resistable stuff on
the remaining foes...

....like these guys.

> E - a scroll of fear

Might've also been worth a shot.

> n - a ring of invisibility

Like this here, although the turns required to use it and for pursuers
to lose your scent are always problematic.
