Lightning was my only weakness with this guy, and it finaly got him.
A failed blinking on Zot5 landed me in a room with two storm dragons
and 2 lighting casting elf anihilators. I was probably 1 turn away from
being teleported out Best part, I had a storm dragon armor with me. Still, this guy was a lot of fun and my best character by far (second
best was a level 19 human palladin who was killed at the bottom of
Elven Halls). Everything went down fast as soon as I got into melee
range.
High AC, shield defence, and high damage but no rods, spells, or
leveled wands.

I guess that room was not one of the big rooms of Zot 5 which are placed
around the Orb, right? Cause until you've got the Orb, teleporting isn't
possible there (though I don't know whether it's also true for the
entire level). But don't get me wrong: teleport mutation (and probably
all kinds of random teleport which is what you seemed to try) can very
well throw you _into_ this area and thus is extremely dangerous. Fatal
one-way ticket: you can't deliberately teleport out anymore! Without
carrying the Orb I never would dare to (uncontrolled) teleport on Zot 5.

I wouldn't say "in general". One of my last characters who also died at
Zot 5 had no problems at all with lightning attacks and also had no
resistance to lightning. Nevertheless, he killed 2 electric golems and
just seemed to ignore lightning attacks entirely. But he had 18 in
Dodging, base EV only was 2 but he was wearing some decent EV modifiers.
My current character, also high EV and Dodging (+Res.Elec and 1 level of
Res.Fire) has more problems with fire attacks. As a conclusion from that
I'd say lightning attacks are easier to dodge than fire and for a high
AC character taking care of Res.Elec seems to be a must.

Don't ask me how Dodging and EV work together (ask Erik! ;-)), but with
no Dodging at all I'd say this one alone wouldn't have saved your butt.
Anyway, wish you more luck next time. You were very close and it
shouldn't last too long to see your first victory post! ;-)
