I've done level after level after level and just can't find any more
special ones. I've got as many demonic runes as I like (I've only kept
so many), and just the one special rune. Tactic at the moment is to
detect items, detect creatures and if there's nothing unusual then go
onto the next level. I'm beginning to wonder if I'd missed the other 3
special levels though. I'm sure this:

#................#
#....######......#
#...## ##.....#
#..## ##....#
#..# 3131 #....#
#..# 1~~& #@...#
#..# 3~~1 #....#
#..# 1313 #....#
#..## ##....#
#...## ##.....#
#....######......#
#................#

Can't be part of one and the first special level was *very* noticeable.
Do I just keep going or give up?

Suppose I need to keep going if i'm going to get maces and flails *and*
short blades to 27 :)

The code says:
if (one_chance_in(15))
{
do
{
which_demon = random2(4);
if (one_chance_in(4))
{
which_demon = -1;
break;
}
}
while (you.unique_creatures[40 + which_demon] == 1);
}

so the first special level has a chance of 1/15*3/4=5%, the second has
1/15*(9/16+1/4*9/16+1/16*27/64+...)=4.6% etc. Could be hard to get the
fourth one, though (too lazy to calculate, but at least more than 1.25%).

Let's see. Mnoleg and Gloorx have a quadratic vaults, Cerebov has a kind
of castle, Lom Lobon has a huge cave. Go on.

Yeah did Lom's cave. Not seen the others. Assuming the vaults are
dissimilar than the ones any of the other &'s you meet are often in I'm
pretty sure I'd not miss that. Plus a castle is kinda hard to miss too.
Guess I have to keep on plodding for a bit at least.

Ceberov is now lacking a sword and pushing up the daisies :)

Just two more to go if I have the patience. Then I'll die in the Tomb
unluckily no doubt.

By quadratic vault I guess we're talking something like:

################
# #
# #
# #
################

? But with stuff in the middle obviously :)

I'd suggest you jump out and do the Tomb. Boredom is deadly in Crawl.

Mnoleg's vault is the only place in Pan where you'll find bountiful
diagonal corridors. Not surprising, since diagonal is a "twisted"
direction, and Mnoleg has a mutational/"weirdness" theme.

Cerebov's castle is, just like you said, impossible to miss. I mean, it
looks like a castle. You'll find it more rewarding if you have a means
of teleport control... but by that stage in the game, I doubt you
really need more swag when it comes down to it.

Gloorx Vloq has, besides his boring name, a somewhat boring vault. From
the outside, it looks much like an ordinary square vault, except for
being much bigger and having a guaranteed "lobby" around it (I mean, a
square-ring-shaped area).

Good advice on doing the Tomb. Took time out and did it. It's still
scary! I now have Mnoleg's rune also although I didn't bother hunting
him down to kill him. Just Gloorx Vloq to go. Pretty sure I've not
missed it if it's a big vault, although I *nearly* missed Mnoleg's as
not being able to magic map and it being low on items/monsters makes it
not immediately recognisable. But then again if I see a & in a pattern
I don't recognise on entering a level I go check it out :)

I now seem to being doing much more damage with my quick blade of
slicing +9 than my great flail of flame +9 which is also very awesome
:) I'll probably forget to insulate myself in Zot or something and die
there :)
