Basically I have frequent lockup problems with Windows XP.

What I have done:
Installed XP with a Geforce2Mx card and without SB5.1 because it would not install with my Geforce4 card (The SB5.1 card I ripped out just to be on the really safe side)

Installation went fine from here and I downloaded and installed SP1 which also installed without problems.

After everything worked nicely I put the Ti4200 and the SB5.1 back in...

However, my system seems a little bit unstable...it lock up whenever it feels like it, for example surfing or just browsing Explorer.

So far I have installed drivers for the SB5.1 card (XP took care of that) and I have installed the latest detonators.(I got a message that my Ti4200 not was 'tested' yet by Microsoft, whatever that means...thousands of people have the card and obviously it´s working with XP)

As for the 4in1´s I´m quite unsure of what to do...I´ve heard that you don´t need to install them as they are 'built in' XP...what if I want to upgrade then? sounds lame so I installed the latest version anyway

Specs:
XP1600
Epox 8KHA+
Ti4200, 128Mb (ASUS)
512DDR
SB5.1
IBM60Gxp and WD(8mb version, always forget the name of it)

Hmm...I hope I didnt forget to mention anything now.
If you have any ideas then please let me know.

What error do you get when browsing? Something that has to do with msvcrt.dll? If it is, I've been getting same very occassionally. I'm gonna do research on that one.

For the Detonator drivers, that's just the message you'll get if they're not WHQL certified...they're probably fine.

For the Via 4-in-1 drivers, you don't need to install them, but sometimes you get better performance if you do. It'll just take some experimentation, whether your system is fine without them or not.

What order did you install the drivers? Usually, I go:
Via 4-in-1 (now) Hyperion
Sound
Graphics

*shrug*

Thanks for replying Btvillarin.

It seems like I have solved the problem now.
I´ve left the computer on during night and this morning when I checked
everything looked fine!

I installed a new set of SB5.1 drivers and overwrote the ones
that XP installed automatically...that did the trick obviously.

As for error messages, I didn´t get any...just a good ol´ lockup without
warning.

Btw, does it matter in which order you install the drivers?

Oh let me add this:
Sometimes it seems the computer works really slow, for example if I
have 3 windows open at the same time and want to switch between them.

If may take 4 or 5 seconds before it switch window and during that time
it only draws them partially.

Huh?

It seems fine...

The order of drivers matter, but I can't exactly explain it; it'd have to come from Toey, or I'd have to cut'n'paste his post (which I don't have on hand ATM).

What've you installed on your computer so far? *thinking of possible culprits* Check your services, Event Viewer, try Startup Control Panel to optimize programs that don't need to start up at bootup.

Yes it seems fine...lol

When you mention it...
I tried to install Norton Antivirus 2002 but I only got errors...

It stopped during installation and gave me an 'cannot run script on this page'
error...wtf?...isn´t that an error that you get when you are using a web browser?
I had no browser running while installing it...oh well.

Programs installed so far is Cahcheman, Rivatuner (See post in Graphics section),
DC++, modem drivers and Norton Firewall.
A fairly clean system so far.

Cute...I hope it stays okay. If not, and you have to resort to yet another clean install, get your hands on Drive Image or Norton Ghost to image your system after:

• right after Windows is finished installing
• when you've installed the drivers and the Windows Updates only
• when you've installed all your programs

It's best to have it imaged after at least these three setups. For more information and help on imaging, see Toey's Imaging FAQ for Drive Image 2002.

Alright, take care...I'm going to bed for now (California time here).

See ya!

Well, it´s gone 2 days now and my computer is running like a clock.
In the end, I come to the conclusion that it was the SB5.1 drivers that caused me troubles.
This is so well timed...now my computer is working and I have a long weekend to look ahead to
