I have ordered the parts for a new computer which I am going to build, however the Windows 7 I have is a disc and I have not ordered an optical drive. Do I need to now buy one or is there a way around this?

More about : install optical drive

Windows 7 is very easy to install from a thumb drive. You'll need access to a second computer and Windows install DVD or a downloaded ISO image of the install disk. You'll also need a 4GB or larger thumb drive.

I personally use this method:

There are also tools that are available that can automate this process, but I haven't ever used these:

Another alternative is to use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to create a distribution share and boot from the network for your install. This is more complicated, but useful if you frequently have to install Windows on computers. (You'll also learn a ton in the process.)
