I have a question for anyone that can help me. I'm researching for a new processor, and leaning to most notably towards a AMD Athlon or Duron 900. I was just wondering whats the major difference in these two. From what I see they are both overclockable, but I think the Athlon is faster. Is this so?

My other question is that I heard of a new IDE cable, something like Ultra DMA or something like that. Can they be used for regular IDE devices, or do you need a motherboard with onboard RAID?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Klyde

The best overclocking chip out there, value for money is Athlon 1 GHz batch AXIA. Most people are having speeds of 1400 MHz and up!
You may be thinking of 80-pin IDE cable which I believe (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) is used for ATA-66 and ATA-100 connection only. So if your motherboard supports ATA-66 (UltraDMA 4) you'll need this type of cable. It will work with all IDE devices (backwards compatible)

The difference bewtween the two is that that the Athlon comes with 256KB of onboard fullspeed L2 cache memory, while the duron only has 64KB onboard. If you look at some benchmarks, this seems to make a good performance impact in many high powered applications. But if your needs are meager and your low on cash, a Duron can simply not be beaten.

Actually, it still is 40-pin but with 80 wires.

The athlon is much faster than the duron, and more expencive too. It's like the pentium and the celeron, the celeron is the low money prossesor like the duron, and the pentium is the high performance processor like the athlon.
So go for an athlon it's much better.

t-bird 900 is $110, duron 900 is $95. the fifteen bucks is worth the cache.

At the core of every system: "I'm sorry dave, i'm afraid i can't do that."

The only difference is the L2 Cache size. The Athlon Socket A has 256kb full speed, while the Duron only has 64kb.

There is Netlink.

Not too sure of others. I also check A-Power (http://www.a-power.com) but they are harder to order from. Mainly I check them because Netlink will match their prices. :)

Haven't overclocked it yet :) After I got the chip I spent 10 minutes practicing putting on and off the heatsink. hehe.. truth be told its not that hard, I can't imagine why people would be cracking their cores.

Amm, Sunny computers is at the corner of Hollywood st and the east end of the building.. sorry I can't be more descriptive, but they don't have names for the corridors by the doors and windows :(
