Dell U2711 vs Viewsonic VP2770

Hello,
I need to buy a monitor as a birthday present. All he said was that he wanted a monitor minimum size 27" for watching films from his laptop via hdmi. I really don't know a lot about technology but from doing some google searches i have come to the conclusion that i should pick either Dell U2711 or Viewsonic VP2770. Please can someone tell me which one i should buy. It would be purely for watching films/movies. (Not for gaming).

The Dell is a great monitor but is an older series.
