I got this idea when I saw 'you enter the maze of staircases' for the
hundredth time yesterday. I thought: well, if it's a maze, why can't I map
it? Why can't I remember which staircases I took to get to that level?

Then I thought it could be a cool way to introduce permanent levels in
*band-like game. Of course, it'd change the game balance totally.

The idea is as follows: the automap you draw when you explore the level
would get recorded on an empty map sheet in your map case. It gets
recorded together with the description on how to get to that level, so you
can get back to that level as long, as you've got the proper map.

You've got only a finite number of map sheets, however, and you can reuse
them -- this way you don't have to keep each and every level in the memory
and in the savegame.

There is a map shop, where you can buy empty map sheets, but also sell
already filled maps (the price would depend on the value of items left on
the level). You could also buy maps of special, extra interesting levels -
most of them with only the path to the interesting room explored, but
maybe some totally explored maps too (those would be more expensive).

Well, I don't think it's exactly like that in Hengband. I don't remember the
map buy thing for example and the persistant maps only work for the last
visited level.
