You sound a wee bit confused (no offence intended).

Your question needs a few more bits of info really

1 - What do intend you use the machine for?

2 - Current Specs of the machine (make and model of parts etc, most of this info can be gleaned form using CPU-Z)?

3- Budget for any upgrades and desirable outcome of any upgrades?

Also have you confused running your SSD on SATA 6GB/s (SATA III) with running it with 6GB RAM? Theres not really any bonus running an SSD with more RAM.

If your on a DD2 based platform its fairly old depending on what you want to achieve with it your often better moving to a newer platform.

Hi there I'm not at home at he moment I'm actually on holiday I'm on my ipad2.lol ok ile start from the beginning I have an Asus P5N-D motherboard and bought a 128gb ssd when reading up about the ssd it mentioned that I would be better with 6-8gb of RAM I've allready got a matching pair of CorsairXMS 2x2gb RAM.and without thinking went and bought anther matching pair of 2x1gb RAM as to try and get the best from my ssd when I added the 2x1 my tower wouldn't boot up BSOD.took it to the local computer shop where I had bought the 2x1gb RAM.left it with him and told him what had happened

Where he ran some tests and came to the conclusion that 1of my Corsair XMS had failed.contacted Corsair there waiting on a RMA from me when I get home.but I couldn't wait and went and bought another 2x2gb RAM added them and everything seems ok.but to get the best from my ssd I would have been better upgrading the motherboard and getting a DDR3 board lol sorry if this has taken much of your time but as it stands just now I'm going to have 2x1gb RAM. 2x2gb RAM And another 2x2gb RAM all DDR2 and havnt had much time to spend on my pc to see how it's doing any help would be much appreciated with kindest regards Scott

Ok still lack of info though, what do you want to do with this PC? If its a bit of web browsing and some youtube viewing you likely have plenty (though you havent told us what CPU and Graphics you have). If you want to run the latest AAA title games then your probably lacking. If you want break complex cryptographic sequences then ypur likely lacking, if you want to edit PDF's then you have plenty.........

If you have extra DDR2 RAM Ebay is your friend it gets decent prices currently.

Also I would avoid your local computer shop if it took him more than a few moments to diagnose that.

If your after upgrade advice though we need to know the intended use, current setup (CPU, GPU) and budget.

If you just wanted to speed things up with the SSD then you should have accomplished that I wouldnt update an entire platform just to try and make an SSD run a tiny amount better.

The difference between SATA 1 (which I'm guessing is what your motherboard has if it takes DDR2 RAM and SATA 2 or 3 on newer boards will not be noticable compared to a normal HDD. Like wr6133 said, don't upgrade just because of an SSD

. Sorry I'm just an average user like to download nzbs with news demon as for my pc I'm not at home at the minute I think my graphics card is nvidea gts 250 .as for everything else I don't know but when. Get back home I could send you an email and I could get into the bios as for taking the computer to the shop he had the computer for about an hour and a half sorry for being vague in my answers to be honest Im pretty new to this and I didn't have time to spend with my pc after I loaded windows 7 64 bit home premium but reckon I will need to setup the motherboard correctly at the moment it's in IDE mode but after reading some more it seems it would be better in RAID mode as I'm unsure of this if you could get back to me it would be much appreciated with kindest regards Scott

Hello ROBI_G I think it's sata 2my motherboard runs but to be honest I'm not sure but I know it's an E shaped connection type I'm not at my pc at the moment I'm actually on holiday and on my iPad I've read a few bad things about my ASUS P5N-D motherboard and was thinking of upgrading that aswell because when reading about how to setup my ssd it says to try and do it on AHCI or RAID I didn't have much time to play with it after I installed windows 7. 64bit but reckon I need to go into the bios and set it up correctly thanks for your time with kindest regards Scott

I think I've just dived in without taking the time to really check what the pros and cons were thats just been a waste of money spending it trying to upgrade my DDR2 RAM on that older style motherboard and I'm just thinking what else would I need to upgrade in my pc if I went for a DDR3 motherboard or 1 that was AHCI enabled to get the best from my ssd I've also got a hitachi 500gig hard drive to and think I'm going to run into trouble because I couldn't get the motherboard to take my ssd in RAID mode but ile no more when I get the chance to spend a bit of time with my computer when I get home

RAID - Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks - not relevent to you

see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID

Its usual when using an SSD to set from IDE to AHCI mode

From your listed uses I would say there is no point at all in updating platform, to be honest you didnt need the extra RAM. Simply ask yourself is the machine achieving all you need if the answer is yes then its all good. Moving from SATA I to SATA III would make no real noticeable difference definitley not reason to upgrade.

If you do change platform you would need , mobo, RAM, CPU so anywhere from £250 - skys the limit in price.
