How often are you defraging? What apps are you running, and are you using programs that cause a HD to frag quicker than the average user?

Diskeeper Lite is what XP uses.

I use the full blown version as well as perfect Disk. VoptXP is good and fast too.

Diskeeper all the way.

Windows uses the Diskeeper basic too, albeit it is not just slow but very much inefficient, to the point I'd not even recommend using it if you're serious about wanting results. The Windows defragmenter in Win98 was quite powerful, but the one in XP is just not quite there. Diskeeper 9, the current version, is your best bet IMO too. It is very fast, very efficient and often will make a difference. The boot-time defragmentation is also a helpful thing sometimes.

Anyone using his comp often will have it fragmented. Gamers, multimedia users, are all guilty of it.

One way I think can be used to see how a setup can improve from each defragmenter, is if you Ghost a drive in the exact state it was before defragmented. I would assume overwriting all the disk with the Ghost copy would reinsert it all the same way?

No I meant before defragmentation, because you want to see how each defragmenter handles the situation.

Oh, I see what you mean now. Well you can also ghost it when defragmented after installing everything, to revert back to a clean defragged drive when you screw up installing all that cool free software and spyware!

Heheh yeah that is true.

There is another method, but the problem is it always restores the system to its initial set state, the program is called Deep Freeze. Widely used in educational establishments, as it is an almost foolproof method to prevent anything being permanently resident, including viruses. You can attempt anything at it, including deleting the Windows folder, the system files, infecting the root with worms and viruses, storing porn. The next reboot you do will make you pissed off.
The good thing with that program though, if I am not mistaken by its functioning, is you could probably set a defragmentation right before "freezing" the drive, and therefore never have to defrag afterwards, no matter how much you change and install, remove stuff and reboot. So I would assume one could test the efficiency of defragmenters, but you would still need a way to disable the freeze state, reboot and test performance, then freeze it back. The issue then is it doesn't seem as effective as a method.

Actually I just answered myself. It's not a good method. Oh well, ignore the above paragraph.

jesus i have been busy. I posted and i was going to check back quickly but didn't work out.

I download a lot of bittorrents, sometimes 5-10 at a time(i know they run slower but i can set them up like that and head off to work or bed) and so i doubt that helps keep things in order. I move stuff around on my 2HDD's all the time to organize.

I know i need some defragging, just curious on ideas for what i should use.

I have 2 drives, one a 200GB one a 300GB and both are VERY full. i think i have 11% free on one and 13% on the other.

To defrag a drive, it is often recommended to have at least 15% free space. Otherwise the efficiency of the defragmenter will be much less evident, because it can't play with the space available. And if you have files that are huge, like DVD videos, then you can bet it will be even worse.

I cant beleive that we are having an informative discussion down here

Ive had the software but have been to lazy to read the manual. Im referring to GHOST. The reason that I got it is because I corrupt my benchmarking HD's on average about 3 times a week. Thats alot of time spent reformating. Will ghost make an exact duplicate of everything from my OS to the installed programs? Also, will it be able to see RAID 0,1 I really like the Intel Matrix RAID because you can do RAID 0,1 on 2 disks. This would save me from alot of downtime if Ghost will do this.

JUst in case you forget where we are.....I FOUND WINGY!!!!
ALBANY, N.H. -- A man is facing charges after police said they pulled him from a tank under a women's toilet that was filled with human waste.

Police said that Gary Moody, 45, was under a log cabin outhouse off the Kancamagas Highway in Albany.
TheMan Apparently Entered Tank Through Toilet...

"You can draw your own conclusions as to the conditions we encountered," said Capt. John Hebert, of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department.

Police said that they got a call from the parents of a teenage girl who said that when she went to use the facilities, she saw Moody's face staring back at her from the hole.

Moody was hosed off before police cuffed him.

"It's a very filthy environment, and before we put anybody in contact with him, we had to decontaminate him," Hebert said. "We treated him as if he were hazardous material."

Hikers using the outhouse on Tuesday said that the story was enough to make their stomachs turn.

"He just must be sick to put yourself in that muck. Disgusting," said Harriett Voysey, of New Jersey.

Police said they don't know how long Moody was in the tank, but they said the door to it was locked, which means he must have gone in through the toilet. They said they don't know why he was there.

"I started this business in 1980, and I have never in my career encountered anybody in this type of situation," Hebert said.

Police charged Moody with criminal trespass, and they said he could face more charges. He is out on bail and due back in court next month.

Intel Matrix RAID because you can do RAID 0,1 on 2 disks.

If it was a true RAID 0,1 configuration you should already be backed up?

I read up on Intels Matrix Raid and the way it configures the 2 HDDs, just as a suggestion you may benefit more going strictly to RAID 1, then rebuild the corrupted HDD and you're back in business in an hour or so.

I really don't think Ghost is going to do what you're asking, its hard enough to get Ghost to do an exact 1 to 1 clone of an XP standard drive, much less RAID, especially a Striped Array.

I haven't tried O&O but I think I heard of it before.

I've kept with Diskeeper because it's been consistent with me so far and definitely can help restore a system's response when it is severly down.

Although I wish we had the same feature as Win98's defragmenter. Once you defragged enough with that one, it would have your programs launch so fast because of the re-arranging of them. Maybe modern defragmenters use it, but I just don't notice it to be that significant.

I was afraid that it was to good to be true for my situation.

Speed is what im looking for[/arnold] The reason that I wanted to go with the matrix RAID is because at the speeds I am constantly clocked at, my OS just cant hang on long before its corrupted so bad that I cant get any data from it. RAID 1 hurts my benchmark scores really bad but the o,1 is ok and im always able to go back and get anything that is important off of one of the drives even after the RAID has failed.

Well if you're able to retrieve your important data after the RAID has failed, then why do you need to clone anything?

For some reason the Matrix RAID config stays together longer than single HD's or RAID 1 or 2 setup individually.
Im sure there is a reason, for this but I dont know what it would be. Im lucky if I can run a set of benchmarks at 4.7 in anything other than Matrix RAID without losing everything. With Matrix RAID I have benched all the way to 5Ghz.

Have you considered that you may be just OCing too much?

Are you trying to win OC of the year or something?

Sooner or later you're going to fry up everything, if your system is unstable then its not a good OC, you need to find the sweet spot where high goals are attained and the system is rock solid, otherwise your OC goals are really a short lived illusion, with short term bragging rights, usually leading to a post of> I Think I Fried My Motherboard!
