2. i dont want an HP, they all feel like crap and last time i bought an HP it sucked.
3. Toshiba has some good offerings
4. Gateways are ugly

now, i really like the DELL, here are the specs:
-3GB RAM
-320GB HDD
-AMD Dual-Core
-15.6" LCD

anybody have an opinion on this? I need to order it at best buy.

ordering online is not an option. it needs to be picked up in store in either office depot, staples, and best buy. upon checking staples and office depot, ive come to the conclusion that neither have any good laptops in my price range (not more than $500 with tax and all other fees)...

ive read the review on PCMag, which basically says its a terrible laptop. is it really?

Reply to shovenose

I don't think its that bad.
I've handled the same laptop @ Bestbuy. PCMag is holding it against a higher standard found in other laptops is what I think.

I've also handled the Lenovo Z560. It's Core i3 CPU is about a notch and a half above the slightly underpowered P340 in the Dell. It also have a pretty awesome keyboard IMO.

Passmark CPU benchmarks:
AMD Athlon II P340 = 1300
Intel Core i3 380M @ 2.53GHz = 2260

what is it in comparison to a core 2 duo t5800 2.0 or a 2.4ghz c2duo?

it is quite a bulky laptop. is that a good thing, imo it is because it has easier heat dissipation so its quieter and cooler. is that true? do you also agree that the drive tray is flimisy?

maybe i will do as i originally planned and wait until i have enough $ for a core i3- is it worth it?

Intel Core2 Duo T5800 @ 2.00GHz 1150
Intel Core2 Duo E4600 @ 2.40GHz 1378 (desktop)
Intel Core2 Duo P8600 @ 2.40GHz 1607

Do you use a DVD drive often? Most of the trays are flimsy except for the slotloader which have other problems.
From what I've read I don't know if you can point to a bulkier package as being any better @ cooling performance.
For sturdiness and longevity I think the business class laptops have a distinct edge over the consumer versions. Dell Vostro & Latitude, Lenovo Thinkpad, Toshiba Tecra

ok, so the CPU is this laptop is better than the t5800 i had in my HP i had (broke, the thing was crap)...
well, what can i look for to know about noise and cooling performance?

by the way, thank you for being so helpful, i really appreciate this.

The Toshiba L655-S5150 $449 at Best Buy and Acer Aspire AS5742Z $399 at Staples would both perform better.
Pentium 6200
4GB RAM

I check the Fry's website but didn't see anything that looked like it was worth a road trip.
But I think their stock changes more frequently than the big box stores and they sometimes have a refurb unit that can be a good deal.
Walmart looks like a dry hole but they did have $478 Acer 15.6" Aspire Turion X2 Dual-Core P520 Processor & Blu-Ray Disc Drive, HD 4250 graphics. Too bad it wasnt the HD 5470 video card instead.

Without a good independent review I don't know of anyway to judge the relative performance of the cooling and noise.

Here is a good example of the type of review I'd like to see. Review Acer Aspire 5742G Notebook (GT 540M)

is the acer you are reffering to this one?

anyway, i would prefer a dell over an acer any day, but if the acer were much faster i would take the acer. however, since the acer has a lousy cpu, its worse than the dell i like. the CPU on the DELL is better, right?

what do you think of the acer laptop uniquename suggested?
(i still like the dell)

Reply to shovenose

The CPU is better of course.
The GPU is just 13%? bit under the HD 4250 (review).
If you can road test the laptop and like it enough to displace the Dell it could work out for you.

I couldn't find you an identical model review but here are some for the 655 family.

A Pentium 6200 is faster than an Athlon II P360. HD4250 is a bit better than Intel HD but neither graphics solution will allow gaming on anything other than low if that.

Reply to UniqueName

this is confusing me now.
let me get this straight:
radeon 4250 is better than intel 4500.
intel pentium dual-core is better than amd p360 dual-core.
3gb ram to 4gb is a minimal difference.
core i3 would be a huge leap up from pentium/amd dual.
the dell is still a decent laptop for its price.
i should sell my kindle and 5 of my computers and save up for a better computer to step up to an i3.

i found a few others that interest me (all at the best buy site)
Model: K52FRF-BBR9 | SKU: 2070175
Model: G62-455DX | SKU: 1917062 (only issue is its an hp and it has intel 4500 gfx)

Reply to shovenose

The HP is a Core i3-350M with Intel HD graphics not 4500. It also has a 500GB HD.

Not sure what your tax rates are which is why I didn't go up to $479. Office Depot also has a MSI A6200-461us Core i3-370M for $479.

Reply to UniqueName

nevermind the $450 budget. i think its ok if its a little more, now that im selling some of my many other old computers i can buy something a little better.

that msi looks nice. but do they have it for that price at the office depot store? There is one rigth by my house...
