Temple donation question

I forgot to take my coins out before #chatting with a temple priest,
and I got the message "Thou shalt regret thine action!". So I bit my
nails and waited for the disintegration beam or the summoning of
Demogorgon or whatever, but I didn't end up with any regrets, and the
next turn I got protection. Would it have gone badly if I were lawful
or something?

You'll only be asked for a donation if you have _some_ money on you.
This is the message for having visible cash but refusing to donate any
of it.

If the priest was co-aligned, you lost one point of alignment. If he
wasn't, you didn't.
