Hello,
I am trying to transfer files from a Windows 7 HD to a Win Vista one via a USB cable, t keeps telling me i need to format the Win 7 one first.. Am I right in saying that I need to connect theHD to a pc with Windows 7 already installed to recover my data? Many Thanks

You should be able to move the files back and forth just fine without issue as long as the drive you are moving them to (which I assume is Windows Vista, yuk!) is formatted correctly for it to be seen. A common cause for something like the error you're receiving is because of improper formatting, a failing USB driver, or the computer may simply need to be restarted after connecting the spare drive. If you are going to leave it connected to the computer for a reboot, I would recommend changing your boot.ini file or be prepared to choose which OS you want to boot into when the computer starts up.
