Well
I have heard this rumor a bit on here, and also a friend told me about it too.

And so what i did..
I installed Sisoft Sandra.. And i benchmarked my cpu with this in my system.
Creative Pci 128
TNT2 Pro Agp Video card
and a Ethernet Card

My CPU score was..
DHRYSTONE 2597 MIPS
WHETSTONE FPU 1272

Thats with....
everything installed
then.
i took out my sound card and my ethernet card and ran the benchmarks again
i got..

DHRYSTONE 2570 MIPS
WHETSTONE FPU 1254

With a AMD Duron 800
Gigabyte 7ZM MB..

Now those marks are very close,
the first benchmark with the cards in i had some stuff running too but the second time i just had icq running
but anyways..

Just to make a point here.

It didnt lower performance for me with added sound card and ethernet card at all..

Just to let you all know.

The point was........

People said on toms benchmarks something about not using sound cards or...
ethernet cards in the system benchmarks
plus

a friend of mine
said the same thing he said adding cards slows ur performance a lot with an Athlon

IM proving they were wrong

And Petty's point was that the _drivers_ for these extra devices may be what's slowing your Athlon down, not the devices themselves. So uninstall the drivers.

nothing is hogging nothing

The POINT was Athlons perform the same with Soundcards and Ethernet cards as they do without

no change!

And how does your system perform with the drivers for your peripheral devices completely uninstalled? Any better?
