Hi, my computer refused to boot to Windows because of the following error messages:

***Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup. program.

If you still want to use the application associate with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

C:\Windows\System\VMM32\IFSMGR.VXD
C:\Windows\System\VMM32\IOS.VXD
Press a key to continue_
***********************************************
I have tried to copy these files from another windows with the same version to replace these two files but my computer is still asking for them.

If I press a key to continue, the following message appear and shut down the computer in 10s:
****Insufficient memory to initialize Windows.
Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, and restart the computer*****

I removed every lines in the Autoexec.bat, but couldn't get rid of this error and the other two.
My system recovery disk hanged when I clicked OK to begin the process. It failed everytime. SAFE-MODE won't even load, the Windows again asked for the two .VXD files above.

PLEASE HELP.
Thank you so much.

Have you recently changed your video card, or updated the drivers for it? That may have caused the problem, (VXD are video drivers), you will only find the standard loading drivers on the Windows Installation Disk, so it cannot resolve your problem because it doesn't have the drivers you need, the drivers you need will be on the Graphics Cards Installation disk, or if you have onboard video on the Motherboards driver disk, I have a friend of mine that had a Jaton GF2 video card and he was constantly plagued by this problem, of loosing the drivers, we finally pinned the problem to intermittent failure of the video cards onboard memory. I'm not saying thats your problem but its possible, some reason has caused you to loose the video drivers, its either hardware related or user related, could also be RAM related. My suggestion is in Safe Mode, uninstall the video drivers, restart the machine, and reinstall the video drivers from scratch. Then try to find out what happened in the first place because if its hardware related it will happen again.

Details, Details, Its all in the Details, If you need help, Don't leave out the Details.

Try reloading windows without formatting the drive. Then go into safe mode and use the program to remove your video card drivers. Guru3d.com has a program to track down the remaining files if needed. Then reinstall your chipset drivers, and finally install a good version of your video drivers. This problem is most often caused by a bad install of video drivers or VIA AGP drivers.
