I just bought a new 1.3 ghz athlon, and also the Asus A7M266 for it to go in. I installed everything normally and triend booting up, and... nothing. Ok this is bad, a nothing screen means motherboard/processor/ram errors. I turned my pc and rechecked everything and tried again... nothing. I noticed my twister fan/heatsink were getting hot real quick (i had the pc on maybe 1 minute tops). I took the fan off and started it up again. Not 3 or 4 seconds after I turned the PC on the processor starts smoking. I pulled the plug and that was it. Ok this is for all you really smart ones.. what happened? Did I fry my motherboard with ESD or something? This has never happened. I plugged my voodoo5 into my friend's PC to make sure it wasnt the powersupply (therefore everything would be fried), and it worked fine. Main question: What happened, and what do I have to replace? Thanks a million,
When you took the fan off, did you leave it off? That's how you wrote it, but you may have just meant, "took it off and put it back on". If you did leave it off, your CPU will most likely be fried. When you originally turned it on and got nothing (I assume no BIOS beep codes), then I would actually lean towards a dead motherboard. If it was RAM, you should hear some beeps, or even a constant beeping. When nothing happens at all, you are really looking at the motherboard as your first suspect. Next of course is you CPU, but cpu's are so rarely defective by the time they get through the distributor channel. Any store that sells them should be testing them before their sold. We test every one. Another possibility would be a defective PS. How much experence do you have putting together computers? You might have overlooked some settings and such, but from what you describe, I doubt it. My first thought is the motherboard, take it back to the store and get them to test it.

I've disassembled or assembled at least 20-30 complete computer systems, and never fried anything. In my computer classes we were of course told to use a grounding strap but I always just touched the case. Anyway, the motherboard has settings for "JumperFree" mode, meaning everything is controlled by the bios. Which is how I had it set. The fan I bought was an antec twister with termal grease already on it. Because of the shitty design of the motherboard, there were a couple small towers (the tall cylindrical looking things) in the way of completely attaching the fan. I had it on so the cpu made full contact with the heatsink and thermal grease though. After the boot failed I tried taking it off, but when I booted up the thing started smoking in the first seconds, and I didn't leave it running more than 5 secs before I pulled the plug. Main reason why I need to know is, I bought everything but my motherboard from googlegear.com, and the motherboard from nextgen computers. both were internet purchases. I'd like to avoid sending as much back as possible. If I need to I will probably send back my motherboard/processor/ddrram/and fan, and buy a P4, but I'd like to know what you think on that? Thanks for your time,
Your a idiot meltdown, he wants help, and all you do is bitch about this. Gee, my celeron overheats in summer with the case open, but it must be a software problem because it intel have no problems at all. At least according to you. btw, only an idiot turns a computer on without the heatsink on at all.
Well, my only gripe with regards to P4's are the price but, as we've seen this past week, the prices seem to be falling in line. I really like the current Athlons though, however, I don't like the current DDR platforms for it. Both of my distributors that carry Asus boards both dropped the A7M266, but would not specify why. We were hestent to bring in or recommend an untested platform, so I have to say, in all honesty, that I don't have first hand experence with the A7M266. Of the many systems I've built, every time I've run into a defective motherboard(ie, dead out of the box), I've experenced the same symptoms you first described. Which is why I said I was leaning towards that as a suspect component. You can run into these sorts of problems no matter what platform you go with (Intel or AMD). Don't pay too much attention to AMDMeltdown, judging from his posts I don't think he knows much about anything, and even less about actually helping people.(Don't bother to respond to that AMDMeltdown, you are outclassed here my friend, unless you have an IQ higher then 155, don't even post). Anyways, I think you may be looking at making some returns. Given the amount of problems that can go wrong with components, you may want to try and buy local so you can return a bit more easily. The extra support you can get may make up for the slightly higher prices. Just my $0.02.

hmmm. initially sounds like a Mother Board problem
i got a dead mb once, it gave me jack all, or maybe one
beep if i remember right.
dont know about the smoking processor... put the HS back properly? correct voltages?
maybe try it in jumper moder with all the correct settings perhaps.
Um... well.. here's a couple of questions for you.. when you initially powered up your pc ( you know.. with the FAN on) did the fan crank up, the drives spin up... ??? ) what gear did you have and in what slots? I had a stupid IPANEL in one of my two systems, and experienced exactly the same thing. I asked here for advice/observations before I took my next step... someone pointed out that I hadn't un-cabled the Ipanel... opps... silly me... took it off, and it popped up, straight away...
Nevertheless, with what you are now describing, it's likely you cooked the tempature sensors under the AMD462 socket. Those thermal sensors aren't supposed to get abobe um.. 50 C degrees I think, and the cpu not over 90 C degrees. Running an AMD 1.333 for um... 10 seconds at 60+ watts, will certainly execeed both tempatures...
From what you've annotated thus far, it is not unreasonable, that at this juncture, both the CPU and the MOBO are thourghly cooked.
Although you express that you have built lots of systems, is it possible you have a bent pin on the CPU that didn't go into the sockett? One of the 1.333's I got had a bent pin, and it took me about an hour to find the silly thing... once found, easily repaired, and then it dropped into the socket, straight away.
As for the JEN mode, unless you made the modifications to the mobo, dis-abeling the JEN won't really help you get the speed up on your cpu.
Anyway, good luck... we all smoke a cpu/mobo now and again.... although, knock on wood.. I've never done it...

Go back to your computer course and get your money back. If your are in state education, write to the governers of the school.
If you have assembled/disassembled 20-30 PCs during computer classes and they never bothered to teach you that:

the 'small towers' are capacitors and that

starting a pc without a heatsink is inherently dumb. That is a really bad course and you have no business playing around inside a pc unsupervised. Make sure you consult with an adult the next time you want to use scissors too.
