pet won't ascend while eating

(The following applies to NetHack 3.4.3 Mac OS X Qt, run from the terminal.)

As I offered the amulet on the Astral Plane, I was surrounded by four
tame creatures:
an Archon, a red dragon, a giant beetle, and a solider ant. The end-game dialog
describing what I ascended with showed that the Archon, dragon, and
beetle joined
me in my reward. But the terminal window showed the message "The solider ant is
still eating." I have never encountered this before: a pet that didn't
ascend because
it was eating. I know the same thing can happen when trying to climb
stairs with a
pet; but it never occurred to me the same behavior would exist at ascension.

^^^^^^^

So, even though the *solider* ant was still eating, I take it you had a
less solid ant that ascended with you?

Wait, I think I can figure out what you mean. Since the ant was
"solider", it must have been bigger and better armored than a normal
ant. Hence it was...a soldier ant! Thought so. ;-)

Creatures, human or others, must be mentally prepared to ascend. If they are
busy with the typical tasks of mortals they may miss the critical moment.

For Q*bert fans: @!#?@! And I made the mistake twice in one paragraph.
(As I am quite attendant to spelling, these sorts of mistakes are rare.)

Yes, the gaseous ant had already ascended, while the liquid ant
evaporated over a fire trap.

Nah. It was a normal ant originally. Then it started stuffing itself,
which filled up the holes in its stomach, and made it solider.

You must not have been paying attention. When the liquid ant
evaporated, it *became* that gaseous ant.

So, eating waffles while waiting to ascend would be a bad idea?
