I acquired a used Sony Clie PEG-TG50 recently. At first the memory
stick slot seemed to be working, as I was able to use both a very old
Sony 8mb stick as well as a new Sandisk 256mb Pro version. I could take
a backup and view pictures etc. I went ahead and purchased a Hagiwara
wifi card and was all excited to install it. I installed the software,
the clie detected the wifi card and I was able to detect my network.
While trying to configure the network (I had to remove and insert the
wifi card a few times), all of a sudden the pda stopped recognizing the
card. The memory stick slot itself seems to have gone bad and it can't
even recognize the memory stick any more. While inserting and removing
the cards, the pda beeps as if it recognized the action, but none of
the applications that work with memory sticks recognize that a card is
inserted (except for "card info" which recognizes that a card is
inserted, but shows no information).
Couldn't believe what just happened, I tried doing a hard reset, but
had no luck. I don't know if I managed to fry something inside, or may
be just bend the pins inside. I tried to look inside the slot and did
see three of the pins look like they are bent (look flatter than the
rest). Now, I don't know if these pins are supposed to be like that or
really bent. Can anyone tell me if this is normal (can anyone please
peak into their slot with a torch light and see how it should look
like?). If the pins are really bent, will it be possible to fix it
myself. The screws seemed to be non-standard, so I am not even sure if
I can find the right screw driver to open the case. Does anyone have
experience opening this model or any that has a similar construction? I
would really appreciate some guidance in getting this fixed. The TG50
with no memory stick slot is of so much less use, because of such a
small built-in memory.

Sounds like a problem I had with my Sony NR70. To make a long story
short, the problem got fixed by sending the unit back to Sony for a
warranty repair. Unfortunately the problem recurred, and I ended up with
a total of three similar warranty repairs in the course of a year. (The
work order showed that they replaced some kind of spacer.) It has
basically been okay for the past 18 months, although occasionally the unit
freezes after I press a button -- I suspect that I'm pressing on the case
in such a way that I'm affecting the connection to the stick.

I remember this problem and hot to solve it. You need to open the case and fit a little bit of
plastic or paper between case and contact. I can post a link if it shows up to be this prob.

Thanks Tom. Unfortunately, warranty repair is not an option for me, as
I bought it used and don't even know when it is originally bought. The
service charges seem to be a minimum of $120, which might turn out to
be more than what I paid for it. I hope I don't have the same problem
as you had.

I read in another post that the problem was fixed by pressing firmly on
the back at the seat of the slot (on the "C" of the Clie logo), but
that didn't work in my case. If opening the case is required, I would
like to try it. Could you provide me the links? Also, where did you get
a screw driver to open these non-standard screws (I have never seen
that type, having 5 grooves instead of 4 like in a philips head).
Does anyone know if it is normal to have 3 flat pins (at least that is
how it looks from outside) at the contact?
