I just noticed the Fan on my cpu changes pitch when i go from no load (high pitch) to full load (drops maybe a few notes)

anyone else have this curious thing happen?
p.s. its a classic Kamatai p2-300 on a LX mobo

Woulda thought it would be the other way around. Are you sure that it's the cpu fan and not something else. I get a strange whine sometimes and I haven't been able to pin it down. I've used three different HSF's though and I doubt that it's any of them. Also it doesn't really have a set pattern when I hear it. Usually it's when the system is under load, but not always.

This is probably due to the change in temperature. As the CPU heats up, the fan heats up, the metal expands and the grease on the fan's axle becomes more fluid. Both of these can affect the acoustic properties of your cooling solution.

possibly... but i dont know...
it can happen real quick.
the change in pitch is noticable in under one second, IF you are paying attention,
this works for both load on to off and off to on.
and regardless of wheather the processor is at full load or not it still feels about the same temp, warm to the fingers. day in day out.

very sure...
and the closer i listen the more freaky it sounds... directly related to processor load...

this may sound stupid but its almost like a car, engine revs drop and u hear more "grunt" as u go up a hill

heres a whacky idea....
is the processor consuming more power during max load? thus the fan is spinning slower? it IS a very ancient mobo (2years now)

I guess that's possible, but I doubt it. What is the mobo and cpu? Also, what kinda psu have u got?

Why would I laugh (***LOL***)
Just kiddin' With that setup, I think your power supply is more than adequate. Maybe it's just an old fan that's about to croak...

maybe... but its been doig that for a coupla months now
and of course the more i hear it the more noticable it is and the more annoying lol
as for my system... i cant afford a full upgrade, so i do it in bits...
only thing left is for a new mobo case & processor
:)
and with prices commin down in Oz i might even be able to snagg a 1200C for $360 AU

Yeah, I know how it is, with both the lack of funds and with something little being annoying as hell. At least a mobo and cpu upgrade will give you a new HSF too.

indeed.. though i acutally hope it doesnt die on me (planning on using the old bits to make a word processing machine and frecell game machine) ;)
say... how did those old p2 kamatai cores survive if the fan died?
rugged at all?

I get the reverse, low pitch at low load, high pitch at high load.

dunno, maybe they had thermal sensors that shut down the cpu...
