Ubuntu will install on any Windows PC and can co-exist with any Windows version if you do it properly, but you have to create a separate partition for it. You can't install it on the same partition as Windows.
If you want to keep Windows 7 you can install Ubuntu in a dual-boot configuration so that every time you boot your PC you'll see a dual-boot menu to choose which OS you want to use.

How to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot setup with Windows 7:

You should just be able to install it alongside windows and I think ubuntu creates this partition during installation.

Make sure you are booting from CD.
