The idea is this:

1) If one of the player-monsters on the Astral Plane gains possession of the
Amulet, s/he will head to the appropriate altar and offer it. DYWYPI?

2) Such in itself is a rare event, possible only if the player drops the
Amulet -- except that Rogues can steal.

Instead of DYWYPI, it should suggest you go fetch another one.
Apparently there are an unlimited supply. :)

Karnov shouldn't get off that easily. The riders (and possibly the
angels of alignments different than his) should turn against him and try
to reclaim the amulet.

Great idea. This should also leave a bones file with your former
character as a player-monster.

The endgame levels are not eligable to leave bones files, for various
reasons.

Most special levels cannot leave bones: they are supposed to always be
the same. You wouldn't like it when you arrived at the Castle, and the
wand there had already been found by another character and used up?

In the case of the astral plane the level could be partially reset and
leave just the old player as a player-monster and perhaps some of his
pets. It could make for a really nasty bones file with a player monster
that almost assuredly has one or more artifacts plus reflection and
magic resistance.

"Ha ha! I took yours and ascended. Now you have to take someone
elses!"

Once you go to the endgame, can you come back? That is, leave the
elemental planes and return to the dungeon?

No. Once you set foot on the elemental planes, the dungeon ceases to
exist - that is, the level files for them are removed from the save
file. At least, that's how it used to be under the MS-DOS version I
played some time ago; I haven't checked since, or on Windows.

I thought that was the case -- once you're in the endgame, that's it.

So it wouldn't be possible to go back and 'find another one' (which
doesn't make a lot of sense setting-wise anyway).

In that case I think it might be an interesting idea to leave your ghost
here, waiting for the next schmoe to show up with an Amulet and try to
take it.

It's an interesting idea. One that has very little impact on me -- I
can clear Soko and Mines End with some regularity and have reached the
Quest a couple of times, but that's about as far as I've gotten.
Ascension's a ways off for me yet.

Yes, you should have a chance to get it back by chasing him on his way
to the altar.

But the riders might be made covetous and, if they get the amulet, one
might have an altogether different ending, as neither would give it to
one of the gods. Rather the world would "be sent into a tumultuous
ordeal of diseases and plagues as Pestilence gains ascendance over the
gods" and similar adapted messages as one of the other riders takes it.
